Dog friendly condo rentals?

My boyfriend and I are looking to move to St Croix with our dogs (we have two, can't leave them, they're family :). We have jobs lined up but are worried about finding a rental. We were hoping to be able to sign a lease for one of the waterfront condos - there are several that we've seen that look beautiful - but they don't seem to allow dogs. I've read that there are some condos that do allow dogs, but can't find a listing of which ones.

Does anyone have any suggestions about where to look for dog friendly housing? We have some time and our budget is somewhat flexible, we can spend up to around $2000 / month.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!!

Not all condo associations allow pets. Those that do allow only owners to have them. And even then there are restrictions which vary from association to association. (Size/weight, number allowed, type of animal...) Some associations require approval of the pet by the board.

Some condo renters have been able to circumvent the rules by having their pets designated "emotional support" animals. Even so, I think you'd be hard pressed to find any condo that will allow two dogs.

Many private homes have apartments that are rented. Some have separate guest houses/cottages. That might be a better situation for your pups.

Good luck and happy hunting!

The majority of condos in VI don't allow dogs (or cats). If they do, there is generally a size limit on dogs as well as limit on number of animals and must have board approval. Indeed, check with a STX realtor who is familiar with the various condos to see which condo associations may allow your dogs. You don't want to rent something sight unseen.

If you're wondering why it's so hard to rent a condo with pets, it's probably insurance rates and restrictions. We recently went from 2 pets to 1 for renters, with a size limit of 25 lbs (for everyone). This was after a $30K settlement for a disfiguring dog bite case. It became too much of a liability to allow more, or larger dogs.

Thanks everyone for your replies! I'll check with coldwell and start looking more at private homes for possible rentals. Excited for the move!

When we moved to STX not one condo association allowed dogs. A couple allowed cats but they were like wanting to interview us. No thanks. You'll be happier in a house IMO anyways.

ha, when we lived in a condo-we just moved our cat in. did not ask. we also moved our grill in without asking. only 1 person made a comment about the grill ( this condo did not allow personal grills ). we used it frequently too.

Just because you apparently got away with it, it's not amusing to flout condo rules and regulations. Those who do so are a landlord's major headache and an annoyance to other rule-abiding tenants.

Makes no difference at all. Condo owners are still bound by association rules and have an obligation to abide by them just as other owners have to do.
