Dog Food Recall
Dog food recall! Scary thing. Just to let everyone know in case you don't already. There is a dog and cat food recall on all types of brands. I know there a lot of people on the North Shore who have beloved pets. I already found 2 cans in my house that are on that list. Go to menufoods.com/recall to find out all the brands. It's quite alot actually.
Please be aware, this is ONLY pouch and canned food - not the dry - but the list is huge and includes a lot of premium foods......yet another good argument for feeding a raw diet, but I won't go there!
Please check your cans - the vets are saying they have lost a lot of dogs and expect any number of deaths in the future from people not checking lot numbers. I believe all of the recalled cans came out of Mexico.
Hi Jeff and Mikki,
Thanks for posting this. I have cats only and had a vague awareness that there had been a dog food recall, but I didn't know that the recall also involved cat foods.
I am amazed at how many products are on the list. Knock on wood I haven't yet found anything that I am using, but this is a great resource.
Thanks again!
Mell
Mell,
You're welcome. We have cats also, but luckily we don't give them canned food. I do have to go get dog food tomorrow, but I will be taking a print out with me so I can check the cans. OK so I spoil my dog more than my cats! Actually the canned cat food does'nt agree with my cats digestive system.
Thank goodness I don't feed mine canned dog food. I use dry Science diet mixed with a little boiled chicken or leftover meat. I sure hope they get this stopped soon. It's just terrible.
For information on the pet food recalls, go to the website which Jeff and Mikki posted from the get-go and which has been published for days now in our local newspaper, as in:
www.menufoods.com/recall
and also FDA info at www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/petfood.html.
Just playing Devil's advocate, it'll be interesting to see how this all plays out in the grand scenario. From what I've read thus far it seems to me to be a bit reminiscent of that spinach scare a few months ago when a very small number of older people and young babies died allegedly after eating contaminated raw spinach.
I'm not making light of these deaths by any means and the spinach contamination was eventually traced to one supplier while, in the meantime, all spinach was pulled from shelves across the country resulting in incredible losses to growers, marketeters, wholesalers and retailers.
The animals who have thus far died from this allegedly contaminated pet food have been, according to what I've read and really have no reason to disbelieve, older animals which already have basic ageing problems; and several basically very inbred but designated "purebred" cats and dogs who tend to die young in any case and whose stomachs are genetically inept at dealing with anything other than a grand filet mignon.
If your cat or dog is 10, 11, 12 years old then for most breeds of cats or dogs or admixtured variatons, that's a damned good life. My cats and dogs over the years, both here and on the mainland have lived an average of 20 years and I think that's way above average.
I foresee the poster wrath forecoming and am prepared! Cheers to all!
I have an AS in Veterinary Technology and I can say the Human food is not good for dogs or cats. So please do not feed your animals what we eat because it could be very harmful to them. Thanks. Mikki
They've isolated the culprit--RAT POISON.
Suit has already been filed.
This is one of the few times I can say I am glad that we switched to Pedigree when we moved here!
Yeah, rat poison will kill any pet.

Mikki, that it would be so easy as he sits there and looks at my wife with his big beady eyeballs eyeing anything on the plate for dinner. Oh and how he loves the cheese I put in the omelet in the morning and makes me feel guilty.
Cody is just seven weeks from his onset of geriatric vistibular syndrome. We actually had to feed him by hand chicken & rice until he was able to get himself around. Vet said to feed him KFC. Damn he loved it.
I know we're bad....but

The word is that the wheat based additive that was a problem came out of China - can't we grow wheat in the US?
There is still no determination (at least as I last read) of exactly how the rat poison got into the food nor the point source. Everything is still under investigation and no doubt this whole flurry will end up the same way as did the spinach melee. In the meantime, pet owners whose beloved animals have died from whatever reason are panicking and, worse, some of them have already filed lawsuits in advance of such determination, further tieing up an already overloaded legal system but affording some rather unscrupulous attorneys some pretty good income...
Insofar as feeding pets "human food" there are very few "responsible" pet owners who would feed their pets scraps or other "human food" as a sole diet. Educating irresponsible and ignorant animal-owners is a whole different ballgame... Cheers!
Rat poison was found in 2 out of 3 samples of tested cat food.
Didn't mean to sound condesending. But I just can't believe that your vet said to feed KFC. I called my vet and he said in no way would he recommend that. He would'nt even recommemd KFC for us humans. I'ts full of fat and cholesteral. Why would we feed our animals something like that? Raw food is better.
