Does anyone know what this is?
Hi everyone,
I need some help identifying something in my yard. It looks like, for like of a better word, some sort of excrement.
It is thin and tubular mounds about the size of a half dollar and it appears to be made of dirt. No odor. There doesn't seem to be any sort of hole under the piles or near them. I would think that some sort of insect is doing this. There are many piles in the yard mostly were there isn't much grass. Some are fresh and wet and some are dry. It crunches when you step on one. Thanks.
Tammy
Do you live near a beach? It could be a crab nesting.
Termite nest or trails?

If it is a round hole about the size of a quarter then it is a tarantula nest. But don't worry they seldom bite and they are not the ones you hear about that have a lot of venom.

There are tarantula's on the islands?...Great! My Girlfriend is going to love this! she screams at the site of moths...Perhaps I won't mention this thread until we have arrived and settled in.
Just an update. It is not fire ants, not spiders, not worms or termites. The guy who sprays our house and yard for bugs says he doesn't know what it is and has wondered himself for 14 years. I will keep searching for the answer and wil keep everyone posted. What ever it is doesn't seem to pose any danger.
My bet is land crabs.
My doctor once told me that I have land crabs, and boy it wasn't fun at all. You better get 'em before they get you! (;
what doesn't make sense is the initial statement that there isn't any kind of hole beneath or near the piles. In that case, it may just be mongoose poop. One got in my garage a while back and its excrement sounds like your "thin tubular mounds that appear to be made of dirt". It didn't have any odor really, either. Just was a mess to clean out.
GNT,
Go to "Bugs and Villas" thread that I did on the tourist forum, complete with pictures! You'll like it! 🙂 Do a search for it and extend the time on the search as it was quite awhile ago when I did it!
dougtamjj,
I too, wonder what it could be, possible to post a picture? I don't believe I have run across this in my 24 yrs. of living here!
Thanks everyone. Alexandra yours sounds like the most plausible explanation. In that case, we sure have a lot of mongoose around our house. I am in the states for a week. When I get back I will post a picture. Have a good day.

dougtamjj,
Realize you're away at the the moment, been really cking the grounds out lately and yes, I have seen what I THINK you are talking about! Little clumps of dirt, kinda of reminds me of when I used to play in the wet sand as a child and used to let the wet sand drip into piles to make cool little piles (lol)! Small, no smell, dirt, wonder.....Mud bees used to do something similar in the states. You GOT ME!!!! LOL!
the 'tarantulas' and wolf spiders are rarely seen and usually only come out at night. In fact I didn't see many spiders at all during the day, but than there are so many creatures to see I may have just overlooked.
Animals and insects that eat only insects usually have poop that doesn't stink. Something they could really brag about, no?
