Doctors DeGraftt-Johnson Leaving ST X
A friend who recently had an appointment with Drs DeGraftt-Johnson was told the husband wife team is leaving STX in July. The reason has to something to do with the lack of support for the Cardiac Center of which Dr Moses DeGraftt Johnson was affiliated.
The DeGraftt-Johnsons took over their practice from Dr Nymsha Thayver who was an awesome doctor. She left island because her husband, who had a high level position at Hovensa, was transferred to the states. The DeGraftt-Johnsons did an excellent job taking over the practice Dr Nymsha so lovingly built during her short time with us. The loss of such wonderful, caring physicians is a tremendous loss to the people of St Croix...in my opinion.
This happens all the time. Off the top of my head, I can think of six other physicians who have left over the past year or will be leaving in July. And yes, it is a tremendous loss.
oh no,
anyone have any recommendations for a good PCP?
This is very sad.
I am a Family Nurse Practitioner in private practice here on St. Croix. I am accepting new patients and would be happy to help. I usually have same day appointments available. I am also open on Sundays for those who cannot come in during the week. My office number is 778-5777 and my office is adjacent to the hospital. Michelle McCanless, APRN, FNP

Does anyone know the reason why physicians are leaving?
I just went yesterday to see Michelle McCanless, nice office, nice staff and Michelle really listens.
I highly recommend her.
Reason = "lack of support for the Cardiac Center" ?????
Wonder what that's about.
Been in it, and have talked with staff there. Seems pretty cool.
I think doctors leave for the same reason as anyone else does, high cost of living, family elsewhere, rock fever, health issues. We just notice them more.
It's all about money. There aren't enough cardiac surgery patients on (or willing to come to) STX for the Center to be self-sufficient. It takes time for the market to develop - even when transportation is easy and cheap. The Center needed lots of down-island patients and building that market would take time. The hospital wouldn't or couldn't (probably couldn't) justify continually putting out a bunch more money than it was taking in. Patient capital is in short supply when the economy is in rough shape. The DeGraft Johnsons are great doctors and great people. They aren't leaving because they didn't like it here or because they're greedy. They just can't stay if the hospital can't sustain the program. I hope they find their way back to STX.
