Do we pay VI taxes???
We moved to STX last summer and my husband has been working. We are now using Turbo Tax to do our taxes for Federal and our state from were we moved from. Do we have to file some kind of VI tax form??? (I'm thinking and hoping the answer is 'no')
You are SUPPOSED to pro-rate your income between the two...and yes, file a separate VI tax form for income earned here.
PM me with your phone # and we'll talk about it.
Hello Travelwoman,
Its been a couple years since I asked a friend that is an accountant on St. Thomas but here was her response:
"The tax law is that you are a VI resident and file your tax return in the USVI if you lived here the last day of the year. You could be in the states for 11 1/2 months and moved in December and you would file your worldwide income in the VI.
If you moved to the states anytime during the year from the VI, you're still required to file here in the VI. But then you also file in the states and use a form 8689 to prorate the income between the VI and the US. Of course if you didn't have VI income, you wouldn't have to file here."
You might call the VI IRB office if you have more questions.
Hope that helps.

And if your former state has a state income tax, you will want to file here!
