...or do they just take your call and pretend to be interested in helping you.?

I am in need of a rental property w/central AC, garage, allows dogs, and that it be clean, and well kept and be in the neighborhood of $1500 a mo. The realtor I was working with has never called me back, and I donlt believe that she has actually spent any time finding something for me.

I will be there around August 1, and could use any references fora realtor that will actually do some foot work. If anyone knows of anything please let me know.

Do I actually have to offer these realtors a finders fee?

It's comming down to the wire here, and I have no prospects.

HELP !!!

Jet,

There aren't that many places with garages for any price, and even carports are few and far between. This suggests that you have not been here before, or at least not while paying attention to living conditions. You cannot make this important decision without being here and seeing for yourself. I have not found many realtors to be very helpful with rental properties at all. The few that are helpful, would prefer to meet you, hear your preferences and why they are important, and show you places to get a feel for what does and does not work for you.

If you are coming in August, there will be PLENTY on the market at that time. But you will have to look outside the box of what you are used to. You probably will not find a condo complex (there aren't many true apartment complexes) that will allow a dog. So you will probably need a small house or an apartment under a larger house, and rent from an individual.

My 2 cents (I'm not a realtor): When you get here, stay at a place such as Ronnie's where you can get a reasonable rate for the first week or two while you find a place. Then (a) read the classifieds in all the papers, including Island Trader, and call everyone you think is interesting, and (b) drive around and call on all the "apartment for rent" signs. When you talk to someone on the phone, the FIRST question you should ask is: do you take dogs? You will save yourself a lot of time by eliminating those that don't. Look at dozens of places before making a decision. The process should be a full-time job for the first week or two, and it will be tiring; but the time invested will be worth it. If you try to sign up a "permanent" place before you get here, you may very well end up regretting it for several months, or breaking your lease, neither of which is a great way to start off your life here.

Good luck!

Ron Martin of Reliable Realty is one of the few realtors that dedicates his business to home rentals. MsChuy is right though, you really need to be here. It's the nature of the beast, so many people move here with the same stories aforehand and then may not show up! So, they prefer to see you first!

: )

Thanks for the responses.

I am opening a boating day trip business, and I will be arriving on my boat. I can live on my boat until I find something suitable. Living on my boat is actually my first choice of places to live..... But I have a dog, and it isn't appropriate for him.

What we do for our dogs !!!!

Hey Cindy... just click on my name, and my e-mail will pop up.

I guess I'll be living on my boat for the first week or so.

It was frustrating not hearing back form realtors... never mind the trouble finding a place that allowes dogs. I never even got that far.

I am moving to St. Thomas August 9th. My puppy has to stay in the states until I get my first pay check and actually find a place to live. How hard is it to find a place that is pet friendly???

Hello Amber,

It is fairly difficult... many people don't want to deal with the possiable damage to their property (furniture, rugs, paint...) and also with the dog being outside in their gardens and grounds... If its an unfunished not attached to another home I imagine you have more luck... you will find a place as there are lots of folks with dogs living here... you will just need to spend more time looking and eliminating those that are not dog friendly.
