Do I need a car down there?
Hi, I'm moving down there from Florida. I don't want to have a car, but I was wondering if you need one down there? I haven't decided which island I'll be living on, either John or Thomas, but I'll be working on John so I'd like to live there. Anyone have any advice?
Thanks, Michael
You can get by without a car, but I wouldn't want to. There are loads of taxis (expensive) and many dollar cabs (safari busses), but it would make life a lot easier if yo had a car. You can get an "island car" for about $1,500. These are not prety, but they get you from point "A" to "B".
Thanks a bunch. I appreciate it. Is it expensive to ferry cars from island to island?
Hey, congrats on a job. Was it easier to find work on St. John or did you just get lucky? What advise do you have on finding a job
$35 r/t for the car ferry, incluing passengers. Not something you would want to do on a daily basis. Probably cheaper in the long run to have a car on both islands.
wow, that's freaking crazy. I'm not gonna buy a car. I know that's probably inconvenient, but I'll lose weight with all the walking I'll be doing. 🙂
Michael:
You are better off walking, if you can. Just be careful, because it seems that pedestrians don't have the right of way. The people there drive like maniacs! I thought they were supposed to be laid back. What is up with that? They talk about crazy Boston drivers. There were a few times I thought I was going to die there while I was on vacation . My kids and I felt a lot of motion sickness while we were there because of the way they fly around the corners of those narrow and winding roads. When we were on those safari taxes, we had to hold on tightly, for fear that we would fall out the sides and into the woods.
yes
i think yes, definitely you will need a car. the island is SO STEEP and the roads so narrow that it is very dangerous to walk around -- there are no shoulders. I have come to close to accidentally hitting people at night who were walking on the roads. I cannot imagine living here without a car. plus the "dollar cabs" only charge a dollar if you're a local-- they charged me $7 for the shortest ride (less than 5 mins) even when i protested that I lived here.
michael-
i lived car-less on STJ for a few months. it can be done. my advice is to live as close to cruz bay as you can and to obtain a shopping cart -- buy one in the states if you have to and take it down w/you on the plane -- for grocery shopping. this will make things much easier for you.
you might also be able to thumb rides and catch a safari bus going in your direction. also, there is bus service along centerline road that runs from cruz bay to the salt pond. service is pretty regular -- at least, it was the last time i rode it.
