heddamae,
Most rentals on island are furnished, and a lot include house wares. If you've ever rented a cabin in the mountains or on the beach, that's about the level of kitchen equipment, linens, etc. There is usually enough stuff for you to prepare simple meals. There might not be any of what I call "specialty items", just basic. So, it's all about you. A whole lot of people come down here, rent a furnished unit, maybe add a few touches of their own, but find that they can get along fine with what is there. I think it was Linda J who suggested leaving some things in storage. I will add, leave almost everything in storage, well labeled, so a friend or relative can put together a care package after you have been here for a while, found a long term living arrangement and have decided if your new lifestyle fits your old possessions.

And you can get pretty much what you need on island, but it will be more expensive most of the time. You may have to wait for stock to arrive. That's just part of it.

Thanks Juanita. I guess I will hold off on selling everything I own. I'm so ready for this change.

heddamae: Do not burn your bridges. Leave enough stuff in storage or with family so that you could easily transition back to the states. While living here is sure to be change, one needs to find out exactly what sort of change it is. 😉

Again, thanks for the tips. Will definately keep that in mind. Been looking at the classifieds (apts for rent) and have noticed that the going rate is about $1300.00 a month for rent and utilities. Is that the basic roof over my head kind of apt or more on the nicer side?

That might be low for a 2 bedroom WITH utilities depending on where it is. A one bedroom you can get for less but the utilities included is the difference.

Also been reading the Crime in our Community thread and it seems to me that as long as you keep your eyes and ears open and stay out of trouble, you should be fine. What do you think?

That has been my experience on St. Thomas but your mileage may vary. I'm not out & about late at night any more, though. Just pick your neighborhood wisely & that's why we always say not to rent sight unseen. After you're down here you'll get a better feel for areas to stay out of.
