My husband and I are coming for our PMV in July- we are thinking about staying at the divi since we both like to occasionally play in casinos. Is this a good place to stay? Is it a good area? We will be spending most of our visit exploring the island and trying to learn as much as we can but would love to play at the casino a couple of nights too. Would we be better off staying somewhere else and driving to the casino when we want to play or is divi a good home base for our explorations?

divi is way east long ways to every thing els on island for a pmv i would look at renting a condo or house on north shore condo row there are lots of them to rent easy to get any where on island from there west or east i like the ones by the palms west end of condo row there are 4 diffrent ones up there

The divi is a very nice place to stay as we stayed there the first time we visited the island. However I agree with Jerry, it is a long ways to anything except the casino.

Thanks Jerry and Terry
I guess we will be better off staying on the north shore.

Check out the Arawak Inn. Looks nice and not too expensive.

I would avoid hotels altogether and stay in a rented apartment or condo... or at least a hotel that offers a little kitchen (like Cottages by the Sea, but that's way out on the west end and puts you in the same boat you're in with the Divi being way out on the east end). The more you can make it seem like you live there, the better. And groceries are a big shocker, so you really should try living on the options available.

I don't know if the location really matters that much because the idea is to get out and explore anyway. You wouldn't want to find that your immediate neighborhood is so convenient that you never leave it! For our first PMV, we stayed on the west end, and it forced us to drive everywhere and check everything out. It also made us realize how quickly a "short" drive from one end of the island to the other starts to seem long. Had we not done that, we might have decided to live on one end and work on the other, which would have gotten old fast.

Another place to stay which is on North Shore and more or less "mid island" (east ot west) is Gentle Winds Condo's. There you have use of the pool, a nice big beach, place to have lunch (beach shack) and the units have a/c,cable tv, high speed internet, etc. Most of the units are rented out by the owners thru either Coldwell Banker or Danish West Indies Reality companies. Coldwell Banker has office on site and Danish West Indies Reality is in downtown Christiansted. Both have web sites.

For me, it wasn't just the cost of the food, but the poor quality and smaller variety than we have on the mainland. I'm looking forward to starting a garden so I can grow my own produce!

Having said that, though, there were things I was pleasantly surprised to find... like Asian foods. Yum!

My husband and i did our PMV just in November and we stayed at the St. Croix Tennis Club. It was great, right on the beach, pool, restaurant and it's all condos. We had our own kitchen with all the appliances so we grocery shopped and made most of our own meals. This really helped to see if we could make it. For sure rent a car and drive all over the island. There are these great little maps you can get with the main roads on it, that helped a lot. We drove the whole island several times and mapped out where we would want to live. Keep in too that this is a PMV not totally a vacation. Try to act like you already live there, drive in rush hour traffic in the morning and evening, go to Fredricksted when there is a ship in port if you can to see how busy it is, things like that.
We had a great PMV and are now moving May 1st. We are both thrilled.
