Update on the Dish Network situation... I heard back from them today and it sounds like you need a much bigger dish here in the VI than you do in the states (it's logical but I just hadn't considered that might be the case). They told me the minimum is a 48" dish which runs $550 installed -- way more than I can afford to spend. With Direct TV and Dish Network in the states you get a small dish (12"-18"), and the installation is less than $100. Oh well, back to Innovative for me. Maybe I will get an installation appointment with them before Christmas.

Carib--
We have a smaller satellite dish (approx. 38") and we get DISH network. The only thing is that with a smaller dish you are more prone to rain fade (maybe once every 2 months). This dish cost us around $250 from the store in Lindbergh bay. Also, Petrus (the hubby) installed ours...not the best way to go, but it can be done.
Hey, if you go to the "get-together" maybe he can give you some installation pointers?

The problem is that the VI is on the fringe of the satellite footprint so a bigger dish is required. My in-laws on the north side have a six foot dish as their location on the side of the mountain makes it hard to receive signals. The plus is that we bring down our dishplayer with us and use it while there. The kids just love it.

It is still subject to rain fade despite the size of the dish because of location. Am sure that if you are on the south side of the island it would be better. Good luck!

Hmm, $250 and install it yourself is a lot more reasonable. I wonder how much you save by installing it yourself. Also wondering what general direction you point it in to receive the signal. Our house is on the south side but built into Flag Hill, so getting the signal from the north might be problematic. But if the signal is coming more from the west (Miami?) then I might be able to get it.

Well I heard from Cal again today and he claims they've never sold a 38" dish. The minimum is a 44" dish for $399 installed. That's too much for me, plus I'm renting and that's an awfully big dish to ask my landlords to put on their roof.

So I went back to plan A, Innvoative, and to my great surprise was able to get an installation appointment for this Friday! Last winter the wait was over a month, so if you're in the market for cable, get it now!

Ok, Carib, maybe I misspoke and we have a 44" (?). Petrus can't recall and it is too high up to check exactly. But I am absolutely positive we did not pay $400, but $250. I know b/c Dish reimbursed us for $220 of it (long story). It doesn't look as big as it sounds, so it shouldn't frighten your landlords too much (we are also renting). But I can understand the hesitation. At least Innovative came through with a quick appt.!

Yeah, maybe in the future I'll look into the Dish again. Depends how long I stay on island. For now I'm just happy that I'll have cable on Friday. 8 months of Channel 8 news, AFN propoganda and Puerto Rican music videos is more than enough for me! I want my MTV!! LOL
