Dish Network is a pain in the .....
Don't forget that Dish has the highest customer satisfaction rating nationwide.
Even in areas with fiber and real competition.
For those of you with xboxes, Hulu Plus is now on xbox and it's great!
I see no one has come up with any great features on the Dish DVR. But maybe there is hope.
I wonder how many points they would exceed Innovative...
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - May 18, 2010 - DISH Network L.L.C., America's fastest-growing pay-TV provider, is now No. 1 in customer satisfaction among satellite and cable companies, according to the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI).
In this year's survey, DISH Network scored a 71 for customer satisfaction - a significant seven-point increase from 2009 and well above the 2010 pay-TV industry average of 66. DISH Network scored three points higher than DirecTV, four points higher than Cox, 10 points higher than Comcast and Time Warner, and 11 points higher than Charter. Phone companies Verizon and AT&T rated highest in the category with scores of 73 and 72, respectively.
In addition to receiving the highest scores for customer satisfaction among satellite and cable companies, DISH Network topped satellite and cable in customer loyalty and perceived value. DISH Network also received the fewest complaints in the entire industry for the second year in a row, and advanced in areas of customer expectations and perceived quality, with scores above the industry average.

This survey was for America. Dish Network does not consider us America. We are PR/VI and are charged the same rates as America but given far less programming. I wonder how they would fare in customer satisfaction down here in the Caribbean, has anyone down here ever been surveyed?
Alaska, Hawaii, PR and VI all have challenges that are being addressed.
Edited to add: I talk to people everyday about TV and the survey is in. Dish wins!! Even Rotor confirmed this a few times in this thread. " Dish is the best programming source available in the VI "
and
"if you don't like what you get then you can cancel your subscription"
Really really loving the innovative DVR, and now Hulu Plus is on Xbox. TV heaven all in one week.
Hulu Plus on the Xbox is great - thanks for the tip!

This is the real competitor to Satellite/Cable. Dish realizes this too, that's partially why they acquired Blockbuster I think.
Hopefully with the Broadband Bill that went through we will have the bandwidth to our homes to take advantage of it. All on demand all the time with the exception of sports and news is the future, and even those will be just live streams with on demand replay's available any time. It's an exciting time for TV and choice!
Hopefully the VI won't be excluded in this future though the way we've been excluded from Netflix. IMO our representative (Donna Christensen) may need to be lobbied to get involved in working with company's such as Netflix to get us included in the contracts they sign so we are not in some wierd purgatory of being "in the US" but also being "not in the US."
In the meantime I'll just have to keep using HMA VPN to make it look like I'm coming in from the states 🙂

If you have broadband VI you should easily be able to use Hulu Plus now. Even with the new Ipad 2 you can hook it up to the TV to watch it. Also of coarse, any computer.
Both cable and satellite companies should be a lot more worried about digital then they are. The only shows Hulu doesn't cover that I really want are the shows on HBO & SHO, but I could just download those from itunes and save money on not having a cable or satellite bill. Once my last renter moves out that's what I'm doing.

HBO may soon be solved, although for now you need a cable subscription:

Unfortunately if you try to access it without a VPN solution from the VI you get the dreaded "only available in the 50 states" message.
You can see where things are going very clearly.

I agree it's pretty frustrating, my guilty pleasure is pretty much most of Bravo channel, and they show their shows for free on the their website but of coarse not for the VI. But most of them are going on Hulu, another just got added last week.
I don't mind having to pay for somethings, so buying the shows I like on HBO, SHO, & AMC are still cheaper then paying for cable and zero commericals. But I bet Hulu or someone else gets them soon enough. Seems like it's changing faster now.
If you watch on your PC I'd seriously consider the VPN option...it works great. I posted instructions on my blog, the software is very good and easy to use. For $6 or so a month if you like to watch IP TV it's well worth it considering the number of sites that block us (Amazon, PBS, Bravo, HBO Go, Netflix).
You can also setup your router to work with it which I've done so your XBox/Roku etc. appear to be coming from the states. This is a little more challenging, I'm working on instructions for that too, I'll let you know when I get them posted.
The one that really pissed me off was PBS, I couldn't use their site to put Sesame Street on for my son despite the fact that we get PBS here and are part of the US. I emailed them and they said we were ineligible...WTF! Works now though with the VPN.

I rarely watch on my PC, just not as comfortable as my megacouch. I actually used to use my iphone a lot, which I know is too small for most people. Hopefully getting ipad soon.
But I would be very interested in your router idea. 🙂

That's exactly what I did! Canceled the Premium Movie Package. When they took away most of the premium movies in HD the package became almost worthless. Better to spend the money on more Netflix and Hulu Plus.
