Seen your bill lately?

Did your bill have a new sales tax charge for state/local tax? In my case it is $3.80.

I just spoke with DIsh and was advised that my state had just started requiring a tax be charged for the cost of leasing the equipment.

So, was I asleep at the wheel (I must confess I don't read every word of the newspaper)?
Is this a new WMA fee?
Is DIsh just woefully misinformed?
Was it just me?

Need some info from other Dish users before I take my next step.

TIA!!!!

I don't have dish, But I think that WMA charge was recently killed by the VI Senate.

I have DishNetwork and just looked at my bill and I'm not being charged anything extra. Are you using a physical location for your account & equipment other than the VI? What "state" does Dish think you live in? Last time I checked, the VI was a US Territory, not a state. Did you purchase your equipment (satellite and receiver)? Why would they think you are leasing the equipment. I suggest you call them again and get another customer service rep. who knows their geography. Alot of people don't know where the VI is? Maybe the person you talked to thinks the VI is Virginia (instead of VA).

The same tax appeared on my Dish Network bill that arrived today. No explanation, the bill just went up another $3.88. Since we also now pay extra to a separate company to have cbs and nbc (still can't get them to give us back abc), the overall bill is up more than $10 per month for fewer channels than a year ago when the whole lawsuit happened that had them turn off the remote local channels.

Alexandra, We finally got ABC through All America Direct. It took lots of phone calls and several customer service reps. Finally got one who said yes! It was on within 5 minutes. Just keep calling. I don't know about the new tax. Haven't gotten my e-statement yet and I couldn't check because they are off line for technical issues right now.

Juanita - I don't suppose you know the name of the rep who said Yes? lol
My husband isn't particularly patient with that kind of ineptitude and although he has tried he still hasn't gotten them to turn abc back on. He was just to the point of thinking that Lost might start to make sense and then he couldn't watch it anymore.

I probably do have the rep's name written down somewhere, but it doesn't matter. They won't let you ask for a rep by name. You are just stuck with the person who answers the phone. How long has it been since you called? There was a major "opening up" of eligibility about 2 months ago.
I don't watch Lost, but some of the prime time shows come on so late. The networks come out of San Francisco and Atlanta. If it's out of SF, it can be a late night. Jeopardy comes on at 11:00 PM.
Keep trying, and good luck!

he tried about 10 days ago when none of the networks were coming up one night and he called to ask why. They had to reset the system and they came back on right away, but the girl on the phone still gave him the runaround about abc and wouldn't turned it on. We signed a waiver in the past to have it on via Dish Network and signed one again when the new company took over the network feeds but they didn't honor it and can't explain why since we know people who do have abc turned on.

When the networks were arranged via dish, we had dual feeds for all three networks, one for each out of NYC and another out of Seattle, which was what we chose from the list since we are originally from Seattle but also knew we wanted to see network shows somewhat close to our own time zone and only watch Seattle news now and then. With the new system for networks, they gave us Atlanta and San Francisco and we don't have any choice in the matter. At least we still have one on eastern time so we're only off by one hour this time of year.

No tax on my bill that I can tell! I haven't tried to get ABC, NBC, and fox again, but my honey pays by the year for the villas and still has it! They never took it away! These channels are a must for football season! I will have to try to get them again!

Alexandra, since you are the only other person against whom this tax was levied, I will keep you updated by PM.

This matter will apparently require a response from my lawyer alter-ego as Dish is sticking to their guns that the VI (no, not VA) has required the tax be imposed. Of course, the LTG insists this is incorrect. I am awaiting their reference to authority and how the tax is calculated and for what services it is to be imposed.

What is curious is that I don't have local programming and have never had the tax before--very random indeed.

Dishnetwork and All American Direct (AAD) don't say yes or no to ABC, NBC, CBS, or Fox. Dish had been approving people for years and fighting to keep your "distant networks" until a federal judge shot them down. 800,000 of Dishnetwork's 13 million subscribers were effected.
It's like this..... let's use ABC, WSVI for an example. When you call AAD they have to (by law) submit a waiver to your local affiliate. It's up to your local affilliate to approve or not approve. The FCC protects WSVI's territory. They, WSVI , seem to feel approving the waiver is going to cost them viewers and advertising dollars. Probably so! If you want to call the people that can say yes to your waiver call your local affilliate. Once you get approved for the waivers you get networks from Atlanta and San francisco. Sports fans love the choice.

As for the tax......have not seen it. Dish could double my bill and I'd never go with Innovative or Choice. I hear recently that Innovative is not issuing boxes. One of my clients returned one of her boxes because some of the channels were missing. The lady at the cable co. took the box and said she could not replace it. When asked if she could have the "broken one" back she was told no. Sent her packing.... and now she's a Dish customer. A friend of mine had his cable box stolen with his TV and DVD player. Innovative informed him that "losing" the cable box would cost him $750.00.. Give me a break!! Another Dishnetwork customer and his whole system cost less than an Innovative, refurbished, 10 year old before it hit island cable box!.

Dishnetwork is the only way to go in the Virgin Islands hands down! No one else can offer PPV, Dual tuner DVRs, (or DVR for that matter), HD programming, NHL Center Ice, NBA league pass, MLB extra innings, Fox news........The list goes on! And when you call for customer service you actually get someone that will try helping!!!!!

Yes, there is an upfront investment for a Dish system and it's not for everyone but the cost can easily be less than most TVs purchased these days and should out live several TVs. If you own your home and plan on staying a while? Do yourself and your family a favor and get Dishnetwork.

We've used Innovative for more than 4 years. I would give them a solid B as far as channels and service. Our cable box went out about a month ago and I got a new one without incident. The customer service rep did say they were having trouble getting replacement boxes from the states, so that may be the reason the are not issuing new ones.

But to each his/her own. The channels we have are fine for us, the price is right and the hassle factor is very low. Those are my main requirements in any utility.

"Dish could double my bill and I'd never go with Innovative or Choice."

It's only fair to note that SkysTheLimit is a Dishnetwork dealer on STX.

Yes I am an Authorized Dishnetwork Retailer!! Thanks for noticing. If I needed to advertise it would not be here. Just my 2 cents worth. Feel free to PM me for free advice. I still pay a bill and would NEVER switch. If I lived in the states and had viable choices I probably would not be so enthusiastic about dish. But... We had Innovative cable for a few months after moving here .We were in a condo and it was totally unacceptable. Then I was told by Innovative that running cable to the house I was living in was 18 WAPA poles away from a connection, $5000 installation. Had to laugh!!! Hello Dish and never looked back. That was several years ago though and I'm sure with all the upgrades Innovative has made in its distribution system there service has improved!?? Not from the stories I hear daily. If you haven't had a DVR or reliable service you don't know what you're missing. Several of my best clients are Innovative employees.

If you have a system that is underperforming or just have questions let me know.

If you have Choice or Innovative and are happy then that's great. Some areas get better reception than others and some people just don't care or watch much TV. Cool! Others have poor reception and/or really care and that's where I can help.

It really is more professional to acknowledge any interest you have in goods or services you are talking up on a board like this.

Linda J The title of this thread is Dishnetwork customers...please look. Shame on you, a cable customer for even looking!! Just kidding. Really just trying to help existing Dish customers on this board. BTW I think your my neighbor.

"A solid B" "It's just TV" Some people value it more than others and don't want to accept a B plus when an A plus is easily obtainable.

Why would expressing an opinion require eating crow?

I work for a hotel on STX. Every time I mention that hotel in a post, I feel bound to also mention my relationship to it. If I say my hotel is the best on STX, a reader deserves to know my jugement is colored by the fact that it's my bread and butter.

That was my only point.

Hey Linda.

I agree with you. I think disclosing that one is employed by the business one is recommending (or deriding) helps readers to make an informed judgment about one's posts. A local used car dealer recommending someone sell their car in the states and purchase locally is obviously proffering self-interested advice. The advice may nevertheless be sensible, but the poster's employment biases should be disclosed so that individual readers can evaluate the different recommendations they receive with the biases in mind.
