Difficult to get government jobs?
Hello, I'm 23 years old and will be graduating from college in december. I have always had a dream of living the island life, like most here, and have narrowed my choices to VI, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii, in that order of preference. Unfortunately I have not chosen a special-skill profession that makes me valuable, I went to college under social sciences, history specifically. I want to use my education in a job where it is relevant, and I think working in some government agency, like archives is a good way to go. but these jobs are difficult to get anyways, is it more so in VI? thanks for any information.
Yes it is difficult to come down and get a government job, unless you have some special skill.
Why would they hire you instead of a local resident? And one doesn't become a resident until they have resided on-island for one year.
Most people come down and find any job they can while they look for a long-term job.
why don't you plan on a visit to take a look around and get a feel for the VI?
You could try the federal government, particularly in Puerto Rico where several agencies have offices. I am starting a government job in February. Try the usajobs.gov website.
Well I do plan on coming down to see about work before actually moving. But my point is that I don't want to work at a restaurant my entire life even if it is in VI. I'd like to put my education to good use, i'm just afraid that without special skills it will be difficult for me to do so.
Mateo,
I don't think Linda was suggesting that you would have to work in a restaurant your entire life but perhaps for several months, maybe a couple of years. As you meet people you will hear about possible employment opportunities, one of which might be a good match for your interests and aptitude. If you volunteer in a place like a museum or library you will increase your likelihood of meeting someone involved with archives and your volunteerism could eventually lead to paid employment. You're only twenty-three so you'll have to pay some dues but if you network in strategically chosen places you may find your niche.
I think its difficult anywhere to gain your first job out of college; on a small island it will be like trying to accomplish that in small town USA without ever leaving the city limits.
I'm 24, I moved down a year and a half ago. I had plans to work on boats and have fun while gaining knowledge for a year or two or see what happens and eventually go back to the states. I'm loving it and I found a career job that I love in the hotel industry. It has almost nothing to do with what I studied in school either. You can NEVER plan exactly how things will work out for you.
It is extremely difficult to get a government job in the VI. Even if they advertise for a position doesn't mean they really plan on hiring someone to fill it. You have to get a "NOPA" letter before you can work for the VI government and they haven't been issuing many for years. They are so behind on their retirement expensense, it's insane. If you really do plan on getting a job down here, you will have to move here first. They don't like to hire people from the states. Good luck.
