Where do residents of STT go for makeup and clothing purchases? I realize that one can purchase online items, but I'm one of those silly folks who likes to try on their clothes before buying them.

There's only one department store - KMart. There are several smaller clothing stores and several make-up options at some of the stores which specialize in perfurmes.

I'm also one that likes to try on clothes before buying them at Goodwill. Any Goodwills on STT?

No Goodwills. Flea market at the Humane Society is probably close & I used to see some new items from store closings (rarely) there. There are clothing stores here but I tend to get to know the brands I like & their sizing & buy online or through catalogs. There are White House/Black Market, a new Chico's, Outrigger in Havensight plus more downtown. I hardly ever go downtown so hopefully someone can fill you in on what's down there. Also, Rave.

Marianne's at Tutu Mall and at the Wheatley Center across from K-mart in Estate Thomas (near the hospital) on STT. Lots of clothing stores in Charlotte Amalie, you just have to get to know the stores and which one has what you want. Tommy Hilfiger, Carribean Surf Co., etc. Also a great little store in Red Hook.

Hi Jennifer,

Regarding shopping on STT and STJ:

As you already know, shopping here will not even remotely compare with the stateside experience. No way. No how.

That said, I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the range and quality of products available here.

As far as makeup -- not a problem. You can find many of the major brands in town: Chanel, Lancome, Yves St. Laurent, Clinique, Guerlain, La Prairie, MAC, Estee Lauder -- the list goes on and on.

The few cosmetic lines that you might not find here, you can easily mail order or purchase stateside when needed -- no problem. And here's the best part: All cosmetics that you buy here are DUTY FREE.

As far as clothing, there are several terrific little boutiques on STT and STJ that have really great, interesting, and unique items. There are also a few of the national chain boutiques (as already mentioned) such as Black Market/White House, Chicos, etc.

And Then there is Puerto Rico!!! To start with there is Plaza Las Americas (a very large shopping mall with a Macy's) as well as lots and lots and LOTS of other shopping!

That said you will probably find yourself buying things from many different places. After all, even mainland Fashionistas never do all their shopping in one locale -- right ;)?

You will also learn very quickly which online stores have cloths that will fit you well quickly. Returning by mail is a pain. But the quality and prices tend to be better. In June to August there are incredible sales online and you can stock up for most of the year.

For those who don't know there are several new ladies boutiques in the new Yacht Haven Grande complex. or thrift or goodwill, the Salvation Army has one on Main Street by the Market.
