there are 4 strains of dengue. once you get one strain you can not get that strain again. you are right-no treatment for it. i had it a month or so ago. probably the 2nd strain. it will get better. drink plenty of fluids and get plenty of rest. if you do not feel you are getting better in a week or it is getting worse-please go to the hospital

I was bitten by every mosquito that came to stx. After 2 weeks I had Dengue. In hindsight I had alot of symptoms I didn't put together....chills, headache, etc. Then I got a terible itchy rash that kept me up all night. The Dr. gave me a shot of cortisone and some cream for the rash.

After that I wore Deep Woods Off like perume...

I'm highly skeptical of that claim, Jamison.

I'm highly skeptical of that claim, Jamison.

But there's no harm in trying it either. Much less invasive than a shot and/or a transfusion. Papaya has many interesting uses. I've often wrapped cheaper cuts of meat in its leaves for several hours to tenderize them. Wrapping less choice steaks in the leaves before and during barbecuing does the same thing.

Yeah do it anyways, just don't depend on it.

I haven't tried it, but I believe where nature gives you a problem, it also gives you a solution.

Bratt, The road to recovery is twisty. You may feel crappy for a few months. Pump up on viteimines. Make lots of fruit smoothies and veggie soups. Stuff yourself with dark greens--good for the blood.

Jamison, Papaya is probably more effective as prevention v. 'cure'. Keeping yourself healthy is always smart. Eat pleanty of fresh locally grown fruits and veggies. Exercise (vigerously 1 @ day). Stay away form toxins (smoking, excess drinking, chemicals). Get plenty of sleep. Stress and poor diet invite all sorts of elements into your body and mind.

Bug spray is a toxin. But i use it...all the time. Off on my body and raid in my home and bleach on my linens and tile. it kills the bugs and parasites, most likely slowly killing me too.

Tumeric (Curcumin) and garlic are good for the body aches.

Read "Herbs and Proverbs of the Virgin Islands" by the late Ms Arona Petersen for a wonderful education on using plants and grasses right from your local back yard to cure all sorts of ills ... She was a great storyteller, a renown cook and herbalist, a folklore/VI culture recorder and for many years up to her passing in 1995 had a weekly spot in the Daily News written in local dialect which was thoroughly enjoyed by many.

When I had Dengue a few years back, it came with 4 major relapses of utter misery, 8 months of being exhausted after even minor exertion, and 2 full years of ongoing minor symptoms returning every 4-6 weeks. The ongoing symptoms were mostly having my palms and the soles of my feet peel like a leper every month or two plus my gums bleeding profusely just from normal teeth brushing. Bruises last longer and cuts don't clot up well for a long time. Even the "milder" strains of Dengue have some hemorrhagic properties. Dengue survivors need to take it easy for a full year after they first get the disease as it takes that long for the body to rebuild internal organs cell by cell and recover from the damage done to them by the disease.

There are 4 strains that have been found in the Caribbean, but there are also 4-5 other strains of Dengue in the South Pacific. There is lots of great info on the Center for Disease Control website. Most people don't understand that it's not the mosquitoes that bite you at sunset that are most likely to cause Dengue. It's the day-biting variety that will get you. Waiting for sunset to spray some repellent doesn't do the job.
