Decided to go for the move, questions about shipping
I posted earlier in the month about the possibilty of taking a job on STT. I decided to go for it and am set to arrive Sept. 11. I'll be staying with a co-worker until I get my own place, a search that will commence once I am on island.
I'm working on preparing most of my stuff for shipping. What's the best way to get it to the VI and ensure it gets to me in the same condition it was when I sent it?
Also, I'm shipping my car via Crowley. They keep telling me I'm only allowed 30 cubic feet of stuff in the car, but a co-worker said I should "just cram all that (I) can in the car because they never check." I plan on putting boxed-and-ready-to-ship things in the car just in case I have to take them out, but what is the likelihood I will have to?
Also, I have a vacuum cleaner (which would definitely come in the car). Is that something I'm likely to need there?
The Settler's Guide (and my new boss) said it's fairly easy to find furniture/appliances cheap because other people are moving out. Is that true?
Oh, and are there any storage facilities where I can leave all my boxes and bubble wrap for the inevitable next move? I always forget about that and have to spend a ton of money on packing materials.
Thanks in advance!
Hi, I'm just wondering where you are going to work. My husband is looking at transferring down there and I was wondering what kind of relocation you got and if it's for the same company.
Thanks,
Liz
I'm going to be working for the Virgin Islands Daily News in the St. Thomas office.
Megan, check some of the moving stories under "What to Expect" in the Moving Guide. Although I did not ship my car, my understanding is that you are limited to a certain amount of boxes in teh car. I shipped my personal/household goods with Econocaribe, had it wrapped in plastic, and shipped from California to St. Thomas. Everything arrived on time and in its original condition.
Vaccum cleaner--hmmm? I have a dog and three cats, so, yes, we use our vacuum cleaner. Don't know your "hair" situation.
There is a storage place on STT-- Fortress Self Storage.
Good luck on your new job and welcome to STT.
I have a cat that is coming later. I guess I asked because the Settlers Guide says there isn't much carpet in the islands. I'm fine with using a broom if all I have is hardwood/tile floors. Do most apartments have carpeting?
Hello Megan, welcome to St. Thomas!! All the best with your move.
Well I would say, depending on how much stuff you have. Ie. if its furniture vs. cloths, books and little things.
Large Items, lots of them - like the entire contents of your house - get a trailor to ship via barge.
Cloths, smaller items, shoes: Mail them using the post office to your co-worker, I think the max weight is 75 pounds for shipping via post... but double check with your post office. Insure the packages just in case.
Books and heavy things: Pack in the trunk of your car. You can not pack your car full to the brim. Or ship the books - book rate through the post office - is a lot cheaper then regular mail, but it takes about 5-8 weeks.
Things you definately can't stand to be sperated from, bring with you on the plane.
Vacuum - if its not convient to pack then perhaps sell it in a yard sale - buy a new one here. If you house will have carpeting then yes you will need to vacuum. If it will be tiled then you can sweep and mop.
Furniture you can get here yes, there are a couple furniture stores. There are from time to time yard sales - but not say every weekend or not even every month - so yes you can find good deals at yard sales when they come around which they do. If you like super nice furniture, unique peices ect. not many options for that sort of stuff here.
Good luck.
