I will be moving to St. Thomas in August to attend UVI. Unfortunately, I will also need to get a job. Currently I work at a daycare and have worked in daycares for the past 3 years. I also have 5 years experience doing at home babysitting jobs. My question is how many daycares are on the island and do they hire very often? I also would be interested in working for just one family as a private nanny. Do I have a pretty good chance of finding a job in this line of work? Thank you-Melissa

Hello Melissa,

When I attended UVI there were two or three women (that I knew) that worked as nannies; they did have to be flexiable though in terms of their class loads and scheduling - is it work first and then school or school then work??

There are quite a number of daycares; some larger then others. And some private schools have pre-k and hire teacher's assistants to help with the children and in the playground and afterschool programs. So definately prepare your resume and get a few references from your daycare employers and look into this. The in a school setting would be a day time job so you would have to take classes in the evening. Schools with pre-k include Antilles, Montessori, Sts. Peter and Paul. The Little People Learning Center is a day care, you could also try the Open Classroom. And there are quite a number of other day cares you could look into.
