Dancing in STT?

Hi all,
First time writing in- I hope I'm not repeating anything. I did a search on dancing and didn't come up with anything so I'm hoping this won't be redundant.

I've been on island (STT) since February and needless to say, it's been something of an adventure. Before I moved down here I took dancing lessons for 20 years (ballet, modern, etc.) and I started taking tango and salsa lessons right before my move. I really want to continue dancing, but so far have been unsuccessful in finding any outlets down here.

1) Are there any dance studios that teach adult classes (of any kind) on STT/STJ? The ones I've found only seem to offer children's classes.

2) Are there any salsa clubs or anything a little less "bump and grind" than Greenhouse, Offshore and Stereo? Don't get me wrong, that's a lot of fun too 😉 but I'd really like to try something different.

3) Are there any adult theater groups down here? I recently went to Pistarckle for the children's show (Sleep Hollow- which was hilarious by the way, the kids were fabulous) and was curious if there was anything similar for adults?

Thanks for any help!

Hello Jesstt,

Jackson Fitness Center at Antilles School has different dance lessons during the year. I've seen Salsa on their schedule. I just looked at it and Belly Dancing seems to what is offered now. Contact them and see what they say. http://www.antilles.k12.vi.us/jackson/index.htm

The St. John School of Arts I believe offers dance for both children and adults. You can call them at 779-4322.

There are some small Santo Domingan clubs that play mostly salsa music but they aren't in the greatest areas; Bovoni, by Market Square in town and then there is one across from Nisky Center on the corner. I wouldn't go to any of them unless I was with someone that frequents them and knows the scene.

Pistarckle Theatre does adult performances throughout the year. The children's play is part of their summer camp. During the year its adults mostly, although some plays have both adults and children. They had auditions this passed Monday for an upcoming play. For more information call Pistarckle Theater at 775-7877.

UVI has the Little Theatre and they do a production each semester I believe. Dr. Rosary Harper and Dr. Dennis Parker run the Theatre. You can call the Humanities Dept. at the University at 693-1340 and ask for one of those two professors and then ask about the Little Theatre. They use both students and the people from the community in their plays.

And there is Reichhold http://www.reichholdcenter.com/, they would be mostly to go and watch concerts, ballets, performances.

For a while Tavern on the Waterfront had flamenco classes. Give them a call and at the very least ask them who was conducting the class and how you can get in touch with them.
And come back and let us know what you find out!

Hi all,
I am an artist from NY relocating to STT in December. Talked to Mango Tango, who offered space possibility for teaching.
Want to teach art privately to children and adults. Do you think there is a need for this down there? UVI offered one class to teach, which is not enough to live off of.Antillies has no position, Montessori may have an after school hour. I don't know. What do you think?

Hello Katalin,

You can make it work, but may find it necessary to do different things; teach the one class at UVI, have a few private students, sell art work, participate in arts & crafts shows like the ones Tillett Gardens hosts two or three times a year http://tillettgardens.com/, join artists organizations like http://www.stjohnarts.org/ and participate in their projects. There are some artists that teach art at resorts, for example http://www.artbylucinda.com/class/. A couple of the summer camps offer various arts; the one that comes to mind is Hintz Academy of Music - they also offer regular classes during the year but in terms of the summer program Ms. Hintz works with other artists to offer the children dance, art, music - (340)774-1905. The St. John School of Arts is another place you could contact (340)779-4322. Hope the additional contacts help get you more options.

Hi there,
I am moving down to STJ in a few days, and if anyone is interested in having a fun dance class started, on STJ or STT, I would be interested in starting one (after we are settled 🙂 ) Now I am going to sound really full of myself (but I'm not, honestly - I'm really a normal person 🙂 ) but my background is in Ballroom/Latin/Salsa dancing. I have owned my studio here in KC for 18 years (yes that was my only job) I was in the top 3 of the USA in competitive dancing for 9 years, I am currently a judge of events (those that you see on TV - know all the pro's on dancing with the stars 🙂 and judge them often) coach a couple who are currently second in the US, but mainly teach beginners and social dancing - soooo, if anyone is up for a fun evening let me know. Looking forward to meeting you all soon - at a forum get together or even in a class 🙂
