Customs and Border Protection Hiring
For those looking for employment, Customs and Border Protection is hiring on St. Croix and St. Thomas. I have heard the test was being given near the Henry Rohlsen Airport. Good way to get a foot in the door for a high paying government job. Look for it at usajobs.gov before October 9.
Do you have to have your own gun, boat and drugs or will that be provided for you.....oh wait, wrong dept.
Foot in the door maybe but for what the job entails the listed salary range of $31,000 to $38,000 / Per Year isn't great. *-)
The salary range is starting salary only with no experience. Each year they get a guaranteed promotion until they reach GS 12 which begins at $68, 809.
Neither takes into account any cost of living adjustments or overtime.
what is the age limit?
@ Uttica - thanks for the info on their salary growth, good to know. I was just pointing out the fairly low starting range, seems a bit low to be completely comfortable in the USVI or at least enough so that I thought it worth mentioning.
@ Speeed1dy - if I remember correctly the website said the max age for submitting an application was 37.
38k is a lot of money
if I remember correctly the website said the max age for submitting an application was 37.
Hmm...age discrimination?? *-)
so no one who is 61 huh
@ Jamison - $38K ($19/hr) isn't an insignificant amount of money but I wouldn't consider it a lot of money for living in the USVI. Ten or fifteen years ago I probably would have but back then I was a bartender and lived with roomates so didn't need as much. Your milage may vary. I particularly don't feel it's much money for a law enforcement offer job, if I'm going to point a gun at people and have them potentially do the same to me I'm going to want a higher wage lol.
@ East Ender & Speee1dy - I think the age limit is because its a law enforcement job, when they have non-LEO listings those don't tend to have age limits, at least not that I've seen.
If there is a age limit, that must be a new thing. In the past there wasn't one for this position. Search usajobs.gov for restrictions. This position is open until the 9th.
Most Federal Law Enforcement positions have a cut off age limit at 37. As Count said, these are due to law enforcement jobs which have a mandatory retirement with 20 years service at age 57, way too young to retire in my book!
I know people who have begun their career in the US Border Patrol and Deportations at 40 years old so that must be a different retirement.
Most of these entry level positions start low (38K) but progressively move up in pay each year ($68K), not counting other incentives. They are entry level jobs that usually "get your foot in the door" for the higher law enforcement positions who pay much more like Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), etc.
Sorry Speedy but over 37 years old can still become a technician for Customs and Border Protection at the airports or cargo areas...not sure what that pays.
I was told a few years ago...the governments hiring practice of excluding older Americans was a requirement, since they could not hire a person with being able to offer them full retirement benefits after 25 full years of service to the county!
You know that makes total sense...why work unless you can receive full retirement!!!!
I even asked if it was possible to apply and check that box that I didn't need the "retirement" section of the employment, they said that was not within the governments abilities!
Don't look at the $38K salary alone. If it comes with benefits like health insurance, a pension, job security, advancement, etc., then it's worth a lot more.
if only i were younger too
