Curious
*I will be moving to St. Thomas within the next six months with my boyfriend who is a native there. The thing is, I'm white and I want to know how the majority of the islanders will react. I just don't want to come there if there's a big chance that I will get harrassed alot. I love him, but I've never left the U.S and I guess I'm a little scared! Please e-mail me with the info that you know! Thank you very much!
Heather,
You're still not leaving the US! It helps to remember that living in the USVI, you are still in your own home country. Racially, the USVI is very mixed. You will see people of all colors, shapes and sizes and there are many inter-racial relationships.
I'm not trying to say there is no racial tension but you will probably be more comfortable in an inter-racial relationship on St Thomas than you would be in many places here on the mainland. Just my observation. Good luck!
Hello Heather,
The USVI are US, so lots of things are very American. Of course its a Caribbean island so the culture of the Caribbean will be there to enjoy and appreciate as well.
The population in the USVI is 80% Black, 15% white and 5% other. There is a fairly large amount of inter-racial relationships, so you will not be alone in any way. The racial tensions that exisit in the USVI are not similar to those in the mainland, people for the most part live together. The communities in the USVI are small and people try to get along.
Human nature however operates the same here as it does in the mainland - people look, talk, make jokes... it happens - and it will happen. But this might have happened regardless of who you were with. Nothing to be to worried about though.
As Mary said, you will more then likely incounter less negative feedback here in the USVI then you would in many places in the US mainland.
If your boyfriend is a good catch 🙂 - some woman who know him might feel envious or jealous of you or his choice of being with you and make comments - don't worry about that either.
The USVI are beautiful, go there with an open mind - and enjoy. Things operate a little different there, be open.
