I would love to move to St. Croix, but have read that out of the USVI, StC has the most crime. I also read that the murder rate is high. I would like to hear 1st hand from an islander what you think?

Hello joony,

Crime levels on St. Thomas & St. Croix are about the same.

Murders are often among persons who have knowledge of each other, often within the illegal drug business and taking place in known areas with drug problems. Drug related crimes have not spilled into the general residential communities on any of the islands. There are some exceptions. And some murders are related to domestic disputes.

You can view crime statistics on the VI Police Department's website at http://www.vipd.gov.vi/

Ditto what Islander said. The majority (a LARGE majority! Like 95%!) of crime is against other criminals. Unless you happen to fall in with that lot, you should have nothing to worry about.

hi Joony

just curious, where did you hear that St Croix has more crime? For some reason St Croix continues to get a bad rap, when really the crime is pretty evenly distributed between St Thomas and St Croix. For example, I think the murder count is up to 27, and if I remember correctly 14 were on STX and 13 on STT (I might be off by 1 or 2 murders) And yes most of them involve criminals who are killing each other, retaliatory drive bys and ambushes. Anyway, Islander and Marty on STT are correct so don't listen to whatever people are saying to you about STX!

Dear Joony,

I have to concur with all the above! Druggies kill druggies and, I know it sounds awful, but good riddance!

But from where did you get the crime statistic?

On the other hand, I'm a restaurant owner on STT who, over five years ago, watched a man who was a wonderful friend of mine and a regular customer, die during a botched holdup. It hurts me very badly to this day and I've never been the same since.

But the posters are right. Crime happens everywhere and sometimes where you least expect it.

I still find it maddening that people living on whichever island don't protect their property even most basically. You can leave sliding glass doors open if you insert a simple wedge Install outside sensor lights which will activate when someone comes onto your property.

Don't fuss or muss, everyt'ing will be fine and I'm quite sure that the STX contingent on this forum will give you a very warm welcome!

I got my info from talking to people about my interest in moving to STX and then listening to them tell me what thay think they know! I decided to come to this chat room for that reason. I am very sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. Thanks for the info. Also, I am actually in the restaurant business. I was looking into the rest field in the islands. Any info on the industry there would be great. Like is very easy to find a job in the field? And also actually, is is easy to work on one isle and commute to another for work? Any tips would be really great! Thanks.

I live on STX and there is lots of work for servers and bartenders. You can commute between STT and STJ, but STX is too far away for the average person to go back and forth each day.

I strongly suggest you plan a pre-move visit before you decide. All of the Virgins are very different from the continent. Not better (except for the weather) or worse, just different.

Many people love the difference and are glad they made the move, some can't deal with it and don't stay.

Good luck.
