crime rate
Anyone know where information about cime rates would be found?
Go to www.virgindailynews.com . Scroll to the bottom of the page and you'll see 'records' in blue. Click on this and it will show you police reports.
That link didn't work, but this one did: www.virginislandsdailynews.com
The crime rate here is comparable to large cities in America. Not like NYC, but more moderate. There IS crime here, as everywhere, but most visitors never even hear about it, much less experience it. I have been here 7 years, and I still don't lock the door tomy house. Just dependson your area, I guess.
Rob, I would urge you to read this excellent Year In Review 2004, article that appeared in the Daily News - if you scroll down in the article - perhaps reading the many things we are all concerned about - you'll find a non-inflamatory factual discussion of the issue.

Thanks Marty for the correction. I was close!
What are the more safe parts of STT to live on?
Easy to spot once you drive around a bit.
Thank you all for the information. Its so nice to be able to do this, exchange information... it helps so much. We are grateful.

I would like to know BEFORE I move though, which sections on STT are safer to live then others.
Does anyone know?
Kandi,
The best way to learn where you will be most comfortable living is to come on a house hunting trip before you actually move. Spend time driving around and looking closely. I didn't feel right looking at a very nice home that was for sale because every other house in that estate had iron security bars on their windows and doors. That was a pretty good clue that it probably wasn't one of the most crime-free areas on the island.
That said......
A lot of what people base their description of "good" and "not so good" areas comes from a personal comfort level. We live mid-island on on STX in a neighborhood of locals and right near the big shopping area, Sunny Isle. Had we listened only to the advice of what others thought is the better/safer neighborhoods (including the real estate agent showing us around), we would have missed out on a house that we love and neighbors that are better than any I have had since my childhood home. What made those folks concerned about our new neighborhood was the fact that there have been occasional robberies in Sunny Isle. We moved here from Washington DC, so a few robberies within a couple of miles of us over several years didn't faze us a bit.
Ironically, it is my DC background made me uncomfortable about the estates they recommended, which are way out there in what seems to me to be the middle of nowhere. I was concerned that out there, where there are far fewer homes, we wouldn't have the benefit of as many cars driving down our road, which I think is a deterrent to break ins. (It's not like we are deluged with traffic where we are at -- we may get 20 cars driving by in a day). Worse, should we have our home broken in to out there, where there's a lot more distance between homes, there is no way that our neighbors would know.
Island Paul has the the best advice -- you really need to see the areas yourself in order to decide where you feel safe rather than listening only to what others say.

HipCrip,
Welcome back to the message board. My wife and I were in STX a couple of weeks ago and saw two couples we had met at a VINOW get together last summer. We all wondered how you were doing. Glad to see that you're back.
Arnold
Welcome back HC - we've missed you!!! Hope you are doing well!
Yes of course we KNOW, but how to transmit that information to you without a map??? or perhaps a knowledge of the island. Have you ever been here before?
