crime in st.croix?
hey all,
strongly considering a job in the school system in st. croix (i'm a speech therapist)...wondering about overall safety on st. croix; have heard some scary stories and wondering what the overall situation is. i'm currently living in nyc and, of course, we have our share of crime, but concerned about safety for single women. any info would be greatly appreciated. 🙂
travelbug: I tried sending you a private message, but to no avail! Would be happy to discuss part of your question.

hi eastender,
not sure why it didn't work...would love to hear your input when you have a chance.
What did you find out about crime in St. Croix? My husband and I are also considering a move to St. Croix. Any details regarding relocation and living in St. Croix would greatly be appreciated. Thank you in advance for the info.
hi there,
well, most say it's primarily safe...going for a pre-move visit this weekend-wed. need to get a feel for myself and see if the move seems right. will be happy to chat about my impressions upon my return. have you been there before?
I am also going for a pre-move visit on Sept 29th. I am concerned with crime and with the private schools. I have twin daughters (16) and want to make sure they will be safe.
I moved to STX a couple years ago with two teenage sons. They both did fine and were not afraid of the island or becoming the victims of crime. They did complain a bit that there was a fair amount of drug (mostly marijuana and alcohol) use among kids in their private school. Just something to watch out for!
Just wanted to say I just came back from a pre move visit to St. Croix and I loved it. My husband and I encountered nothing but friendly people. We went EVERYWHERE too! KMARTS, 4 grocery stores, liquor stores, local bars, restaraunts, looked at houses, went to the casino, went to beaches all over the island, etc. The only thing that I really can say is that the men down there were very open about commenting on the way that I looked (even to my husband) however not in a disrespectful way. I don't know if it was because I am young or the blond curly hair or what however... it was nothing like what you would experience here in the NYC area and even what I experienced in PA. So the one bad experience that we had was actually good because the locals (the men) were very polite to ask my husband if I was his wife before approaching me.
My husband and I visited and although you get an idea of the island on your pmv, it is different living here. Yes, there is crime, just like everywhere else. You just have to be smart and pay attention to your surroundings. There are places we just dont go to at night because we don't feel safe (in my experience, the gut feeling is always right). If you search "crime" on this message board you will find different scenarios to give you an idea of what happens here. There are robberies and there are some locals who are just looking for an easy target. We don't really stay out too late at night and if we do, we try to be cautious. I would say this place is no more safe or less safe than where you are currently living. As we all know, crime can happen anywhere, including the finest neighborhoods in the states. You have to do your best to be prepared and be smart.
