I wonder how much it costs society to take care of a knee-shot criminal. Cost of initial hospitalization and surgery, probably lots of complications and related health care costs, cost of lifetime incarceration...

Oh, wait. This is the VI. Make that the cost of health care, cost of trial, failure to convict, then your cost of the lawsuit (you're sued inflicting the wound), and society's cost of supporting the criminal who can no longer work because of his bum knee.

Edited to add: in handgun classes you are taught to aim for the torso-- the largest target. What do you think your odds are of actually HITTING the knee (or other limb) when you are under duress and reacting in a seconds-long time frame?

well the gov released this figure yesterday, it costs on average 221 thousand dollars to raise an average kid to age 18,please tell me the gov is not paying this much for welfare trash children

The law is pretty clear regarding shooting in self defense. If you just shoot to wound, then the argument is that you did not really believe your life was threatened. You then did not have the right to shoot. If an assailant attacks you then turns away and you shoot him in the back, you are considered to be the assailant. You are responsible for where your bullet travels from the moment it leaves your weapon until it stops. A crowded restaurant is not necessarily a good place to shoot at an attacker. Nevertheless, studies show that wherever the bad guys can expect that "half the other diners were carrying concealed weapons" (Poodle) the violent crime rate goes down and we don't end up with a Wild West Mentality. Concealed Weapon carriers are extremely conscious of their responsibility and do not carry lightly. They realize the police cannot protect them--even the Supreme Court recognizes this--and have determined that they must be responsible for themselves and their loved ones. They hope and pray they will never have to use their weapon, but they refuse to come to a gun fight unarmed. They refuse to be intimidated by bad guys. They prefer to be alive and not "politically correct" and dead.

Thank you for understanding the comment I made about patrons carrying. The purpose of the comment was not to create a wild west, but to equal the intrusive forces who know what a peaceful and loving community the majority of us live in, and take advantage of that without regard for loss of life.
