Crime and moving
We just returned from two weeks mostly in St. Croix, but we also visited St. Martin and St. Croix. I had been a regular visitor to this board for info about St. Croix and believe that the info has been good and honest.
I am a journalist and loved the ST. Croix newspaper, but would agree with people I talked to in St. Croix that it puts a strong focus on crime but that is what newspapers do to make themselves interesting.
anyone who read my posts of last year know I was going to the islands to look at the possibility to of investing in a Bread and Breakfast. Anyone who lives in St. Croix know why we have decided against.
Still, we have not given up on the idea of living on St. Croix. One thing that was not conveyed well on this board and is probably impossible to convey is the soft beauty of St. Croix. My wife and I drove to to the far eastern end of the island. It was probably the nicest morning I have had in years. On another afternoon we drove to Fredristan and up to Ham's Bluff ( I want to come back and fish there) it again was one of those serene afternoons that we have so few or in our normal lives.
Again to the crime, we drove through the housing projects in Christianstad and I felt much less fear than I feel in parts of Cleveland, OH.
Many people won't believe this but I think some crime is relative. I have had cameras stolen, cash stolen, and had a brick smashed through my windown and Merle haggard CDs stolen. It wasn't really abig deal. I am not rich, but I evidently did not need those materials as some other poor soul did.
As for the revenge killing on St. Croix. I almost wish it was that way in Ohio. If some one raped and hurt my daughter or my wife, I think I would personally kill them. But that can happen anywhere.
The people of St. Croix were like they are everywhere, mostly good, some bad.
the Botanical Garden on St. Croix was worth the flight there.

For those of us not living on the island, please tell us why you decided against the B & B, since that was one idea I've been thinking about.

Hello I'm Fred, I have spent 3 months on St. Croix last summer of 2003. A bed and breakfast is not a good idea but not because of the crime. I really don't see how would you have steady business. Tourism is very low there and I basically had seen the same people everyday. Really no cruise ships go there and the flights are getting smaller every year. Now St. Thomas...that's another story.
I decided not to move to STX because of what I percieved was a high rate of crime. I live in Ohio also and I felt about as unsafe on STX as I have anywhere. I was not able to get any statistics - I think the USVI must not participate in the system that would allow them to appear in the Uniform Crime Reports- but I noticed that San Juan PR had a crime rate that was about 6 times as bad as any part of Ohio and that was normalized for population. If most of the major crimes are reported the VI Daily News then the crime really does not seem all that bad - I think the idea of being so close to all of it and not really being able to easily get away from it may make it seem worse. I think each person needs to decide for themselves if the beautiful scenery and gorgeous weather are worth tolerating the crime and other problems with infrastructure that will be encountered. I have noticed that people who want to live there just say the crime is not really all that bad, when what they really mean is that they are willing to put up with it in exchange for living in such a great setting.
Fred hit it right on the mark about what we thought about B & Bs on St. croix. Now we have to go to plan B -- A Tiki Bar on St. Thomas?
Tiki bar? Find a good spot and you should be ok. More so during peak season.
