Cost STT vs IRL

Hi all, quick observation.
From research and memory, the USVI look a heck of a lot cheaper than where I live at the moment (Ireland) and with far better weather. Rent : for example 3-4 bed houses on STT seem to go for roughly $1500, where as the place I am sharing here costs €1500, which translates to $1,843.72 (€1 = $1.22) . A pair of jeans/shorts easily costs over $60 in Ireland. Gasoline costs $2.50 a litre, which is roubly $5 a gallon. Car insurance is $3680 a year here for under 25s! Food also is fairly expensive. Would it be naive of me to expect to do OK moving down there with a decent stockpile of cash (say €10K) and getting any job (snorkel guide, potato peeler, whatever till I find some IT work)? I also speak decent spanish from living in Puerto RIco for two years when I was a wee laddie. My only stumbling block is transport, I don't have a full license here, however we do drive on the left too so it wouldn't be too hard to adapt, I hope.

Any help would be appreciated,
Cormac

Hello Cormac,

Your savings to keep you afloat while you find work, apartment ect. is sufficient. What does half a license mean (or not a full license)?

Hi Islander,

Thanks for the encouraging response. I have a provisional license, which is like a permit in the states. I remember that the public transport on the islands was not that great, so I'd probably have to find a place to live near wherever I end up working (or vice versa).

I second that! We have family in England and Spain so we hear their complaints. You have a good amount saved, move away! We'll be moving from California with less than that, and we're a family of four! Best wishes!

Cali

Thanks for replying, I'm getting fairly stoked about the idea of moving there now. I'll actually be visiting the islands for two weeks in August (9th-21st) scouting jobs and housing. Might see some of ye around!

Cormac: If you speak decent Irish 😉 you might want to stop by Molly Molone's at American Yacht Harbor. It is the local Irish pub...

I thought Frank Brittingham packed up everything and went to the DR....or did he sell Molly's and leave it behind?

(Just curious, he was our neighbor, and we tried calling him back in February, but his number and that of Molly's had been disconnected.)

Ta beagain gaelge agum. My Irish is pretty rusty, but serviceable. I've actually been to that pub, I remember chatting with the owner last time I was on holidays there. He was from Philadelphia I believe. Nice guy, had some funny stories about some Chinese/Irish sailors coming into a bar of his in the states, don't remember the details.

Frank's son seems to be around a great deal. There are ads for the place in the DR as well as Whale of a Tale at Molly's. The number there is 775-1270. Cormac: Chinese-Irish sailors, huh? That was after how much Guiness??

Heh. Come to think of it, he was a bit red in the nose at the time.
