cost of living, rhe real deal ...
Hello everyone,
my wife and I seriously considering a teaching opportunity in St. Croix. What we wanted to know was the following:
If you had a budget of 3500 a month could you:
1) go out to cheap drinks weekly
2) live in a cottage
3) travel around to various island via the ferry?
4) send home about 1000 bucks?
(yes, the last one sounds insane. but I figured what the heck.)
best,
JC
If you have $3500 spendable dollars you can live ok on St Croix. Assume that you can rent condo for around $1500 per month and that a car will cost you maybe $400 per month and basic food will cost you maybe $600 per month. That leaves you maybe $1000 for your other expenses. (you also need to consider airfare to come to visit family or friends in the states). You sure won't have much left over. There are some cheaper housing and transportation options that you can consider. You sure can do #1#2 and #3, but #4 is probably out of the question. At least the drinks at home are cheap, a bottle of Cruzan rum is about $3.00.
Lets See: $3,500 per mo for 2 people?
Rent for a nice place: $1000.00 - $1500.00/mo
Food: $200 per week for 2 people $800.00/mo
Car Payment: ?
Car Insurance?
Gas?
Utilities:?
Internet Service Provider:
Cable TV:
Phone/local: ?
Long distance: ?
Health Insurance 2 people: ?
Drinking money for 2 people: ?
Misc spending money: ?
If you could make it you would be living pay check to paycheck. Not a good way to live. And sending $1000.00 home per month is completely out of the question. They will probabyl have to send you $1000.00 each month. : )

Hello,
First off, teachers in the public school system don't make very much... I assume you have looked into salary for teachers as you have already provided a estimated budget.
With that budget if you stayed in a studio, cottage or 1 bedroom apt. prices which range from $400 - $800+ depending on the place and size. The higher price more then norm. Ship your car down, not sure if you have it paid off already - so factor in that. Other expenses that Jet mentioned... internet, electricity, gas, laundry... lets just questimate another $300 for those... groceries $600-800 depending on what you buy I suppose. And your spending money on seeing sites and going out... don't want to be a skeptic - I think you could make it, if you aren't spendy types of folks, if you know how to save. Not likely you will be sending home $$.
Might be able to pick up a part time job in the evenings perhaps if you want to have extra monies. I knew a couple teachers that were bartenders during the evenings. Another was a freelance writer/photographer, ...
