Contessas's Castle, East End, St Croix
I seem to have stumbled on some pictures of the place. I know I have asked this board a few times for information on the castle, with no results. I have always been horribly curious about it, and I imagine there are others as well.
Cool!
These are fabulous pictures. They are almost surreal!! Thanks so much for finding them. Does anyone ever see her out anymore?
Thanks for sharing:-)
John, AKA "rotorhead" on this board has some great photos from his helicopter. PM him and ask that he post a link to his website. Great photos plus videos. I put some in my screensaver.....(tu)
She was on island last winter. One of the care takers said she was having "issues with her health". I used to see her at the yacht club occasionally but not in the past couple of years. Generally, when the flags are flying, she is on island.
The Contessa was a austrian starlet (I think it was Austria) and married real estate mogul Sid Farber. He built her the castle in St. Croix and she also owns a house called "The Pink House" in Long Island and property in New York City. She is a wonderful lady, I've met her on several occassions. She is getting up there in years though and I'm sure her health is an issue. There are many great Contessa stories on this island as this was here winter playground for many many years. Quite a character.
The Castle is a beautiful , unique, structure... very her! The grounds are gorgeous too and they have vegetable gardens and a water system... I understand she and her current companion/caregiver Yuri also own a lot of other property in the area including the abandoned buildings across from the yacht club and the beach just before Kramers.
Very cool STX landmark and story!
