CONSTRUCTION ON CROIX?
HI Im a remodeling contractor in nj and have made the decision to move to the vi's within the next year.I thought i was set on st thomas,i have been there several times in the past and i just feel at home there.Ive never been to st croix but have done some research on it and it does look like a place i could call home. But i have to make a living,so my question is which island would be best for someone in my position.Which island has more of a need for contractors?i already know i should do a pmv to croix and i would have to work for someone for a while before starting my own business. thank you for any info.
JUSTIN
You can start by not calling it Croix.
i would think that st thomas has more work going on
The construction business is very different in the VI. It's all about networking and working with potential customers through the entire process. The process starts with getting plans drawn that will be accepted and buildable then the permit process which sometimes can be complicated. The actual building process is different than you would encounter in NJ. We have severe slopes, cisterns, costly building materials and a talented work force and extreme weather. These conditions are not insurmountable but they can add challenges.
To be a contractor you'll need to get a business license, which can take between 2 weeks and 6 months. You can see what's involved at www.dcla.gov.vi good luck
