Condos/Hurricaines
How often to do hurricanes actually hit the virgin lslands?
Also, are the accomodations on the islands, built to withstand one?
What do you do in the event of one?
Thanks!
Kandi
Hello Kandi,
I was looking at a table that included tropical storm & hurricanes that passed within two degrees of the USVI/PR between 1819 and 2001 and there were 95 in 182 years for the VI... if I counted correctly. Take a look: http://www.srh.noaa.gov/sju/hrcnhist.html
The last major hurricanes were Marilyn in 95, Hugo in 89 and smaller ones Georges in 1998 and Lenny in 1999.
Yes many homes/buildings are built with hurricane "proofing" building codes in mind.
Prepartion time...
If necessary go to work and help secure things there.
Head to the grocery store to get canned goods, bottled water, batteries, flash lights, candles, crackers... Gas up the car and get gas for generator.
At home; collect yard chairs and lose items and tie them down. Cut down tall trees that are close to buildings, power lines, cars; cut hedges. Board up windows with shutters. Collect water for use when electricity is turned off. Take potted plants inside the house. Listen to the radio annoucements. Call friends and family and make sure they are ok. Get sand bags and rags for doors. Unplug electrical items. Get ice together in a cooler. Tie down and turn off gas cylinders. Collect pets. And then bunker down and hope for the best.
If you don't feel your residence is secure there are shelters. Curfews are usually established. Electricity is turned off at a certain point.

Georges was my first 'cane and I just followed the advice that everyone gave me, just like what Islander said. Although I DID buy a few half-gallons of Cruzan and made it into a party!! Haha! Good thing I video-taped a bunch of it...my memory is kinda fuzzy from all the rum!!
