Hello everyone!!!!! How much would a laptop (preferably Dell) cost me? My computer is just too big and outdated (I've only had it two years) to ship over. Also, what is a good internet service to use and how much does that run per month? And, if I can't purchase one right away when I get to St. Croix, are there places that I can run in and email my family and friends back home and how much does that run? Thanks in advance, K

surfbest.net is available with unlimited service for $12.50 / month. The access numbers are the same ones used by folks with Earthlink Service (who pay more).

Best tech support folks I've ever encountered. If y ou call with any question and are asked to leave a message, or e-mail a support question.......the most often simply pick up the phone and resolve the issue immediately for you....about as personal as you can get.

.............and never ever do you NOT get into your e-mail - unlike the very troublesome local services which are to be avoided!!!!!!

There is a coffee shop in Gallows Bay shopping center that has computers you can rent for short periods. There is also a place (no coffee) in Christiansted several doors up from the boardwalk near Styxx. I don't know what either one charges, but I don't think it was very much, maybe $3 to $5.

Hi Kathy! Although I no longer live on the island, while on St. Thomas, I used a small ISP out of PA - you can find them at www.pennswoods.net or check St. Croix computer stores or Radio Shack if you have one - they should be able to help you set up. Penns-woods offered the best dial-up service I found there at a rate of about $19.95 a month. Also, you're wise not to ship your desktop - both my monitors were damaged beyond repair even though I packed very carefully for the move by USPS, and you'll have the added advantage of carrying a laptop back to the mainland when flying. Good luck!

Well, you have Choices! (pun intended - I get a little wacky after a day with three kids 7 and under)

There is Choice - www.choice.vi
surfVI - www.surfvi.com
Innovative - www.vipowernet.net
Pennswoods - www.pennswoods.net

and maybe others that I don't remember at this moment.

As far as a place to surf the net on STX - Strand Street Station in C-sted is the only one I could find in the phonebook which is www.viphonebook.com.

surfVI, PowerNet, and Choice are all local.

surfVI is $13.96/month unlimited, with tech support, 7 free email addresses, and 10Mb storage. 774-5780 or www.surfVI.com

Choice is 19.96/month, last time I checked, and I'm not sure how much PowerNet (the local phone company's product) is.
