Computer/Electronic stores on STT

What is the best computer store on STT? Are there any stores that carry a decent assortment of Macintosh hardware or software? Besides Office Max and Kmart, what would be a good place to buy things like PDAs, mp3 players, CD burners, etc. How about Boolchands? Are their prices better than what you will find stateside? Is their selection comparable?

Although they are not my favorite, don't forget Radio Shack. 2 locations: Nisky Center and Buccaneer's Mall

Ah yes, Radio Sh*t, as my brother in law calls them. I am a frequent browser but rarely a patron. I keep thinking one of these days they'll start carrying some TVs other than RCAs. At least their prices are more reasonable though. I once saw the same TV for $150 at Radio Shack and $240 at Western Auto!

We bought our 27" TV there b/c the prices we were quoted elsewhere were ridiculous. We got a store model (no guar.) but significantly cheaper. My Sony 35" in California cost the same price as this cr*p RCA deal. But such is life on an island.

Also, there is a place in Four Winds Plaza (in the same mall as Amnesia, the PoliceStation, and that Rent a Week place) that has pretty good electronics. You'll still be subjected to sticker shock, but they had quality goods and were willing to negotiate.

I think you all should try BrandsMart USA which is large warehouse type store that sells all types of electronics. they are located only in Florida there are two stores in the Miami area. I have found that companies that are located in Florida especially in the Miami/Ft Lauderdale area tends to have a better understanding of the caribbean and Latin American area when it comes to shipping merchandise. They are way cheaper than Best Buy and have a greater assortment of mechandise to choose from.

Hello, it's Matt, still stateside. I recently went on Best Buy's website. They currently ship anything they sell free. Including big screens, etc. They've got the best prices around here...and yes the USVI was listed as a shipping destination; although, it wouldn't surprise me if somehow you had to pay to ship there. And what's with the new 2 cent tax?

Cheers,

Matt

Isn't it almost cheaper to buy electronics and ship them in?
I noticed that the computers are outdated and most electronics that arent outdated are waaaay overpriced.
I just bought a dell notebook and had it shipped to a stateside address and re-routed.
They wouldnt ship directly to the islands but where there is a will, there is a way.
I was big on shopping via the internet before I got down here but it only re-affirms my loyalty to internet buying. Usually on large purchases, they will wave shipping too. (Like Amazon......)
If you are looking for used stuff......theres ebay.
I even got an AWSOME deal on a car through EBAY.
Obviously, that would be tough to do in the VI but for other things like tools, its better than getting gouged.
Now, if you havent used the internet before, you might want to get info from people you trust. I think it is a great tool to use down here.
Like my food magazines, they are like 7$ an issue, so I bought a subscription for like 20$ and i get one every month. Obviously, Victoria secret and other clothing retailers are great.

You have to combine your buying with your needs. Being a person with 22 TVs, 7 VCR's, 2 DVDs, I usually shop around. The TV issue is to wait awhile, the Big Box stores usually have decent prices for the island, from time to time. My Sony Vega XBR was gotten at Boolchand's, the only place that could beat their price on the net was Crazy Eddie's, but with their added charges and freight, it would have turned out more! Radio Shack is great for the little electronic things that keeps you going. Bought a mouse there this week, as well as some wireless headphones! Best battery deals in town too!
Only time I bought a computer on island was at KMart when they were offering a Compac 'kit' setup for a $1000. Looked this up on the net of course, to find the same kit on the internet for $900. Obviously to me, the $100 difference was well worth it to be able to just walk into the store and purchase it. Having to wait and the postage was worth more than the $100 to me. My present computer was bought at CompUSA on one of my trips stateside, as well as my PDA from Best Buy. I can usually wait when it comes to buying things like that for when I take a trip(unless an emergency). Makes the trip more fun too, to checkout the stores!
Tools are on a need basis too. Cody is right, best deals on Amazon thru their Tool Crip store. Usually takes about 2 days. Amazon and JC Penney thankfully, ship to the USVI with no problem. Others you have to fight to get them to do so, half of them don't even know where the Virgin Islands are! Never tried with Best Buy or Brandsmart.

I wonder how Home Depot's prices will be once they open up. Hopefully having a large inventory will allow them to keep prices down.

Ronnie -- am I correct in assuming the Sony Vega XBR is a TV? I wasn't sure if Boolchand's carried TVs; I assumed because it's a small store they would not. I'm looking to get the 24" flatscreen Sony Trinitron TV that retails for about $450 in the states.

p.s. What do you do with 22 TVs??

Sorry, yes it is a TV. I have two guest houses that's all! A TV in every room and in apartments, they add up!

Boolchand's is the local distributor for Sony. They should give you a fair deal. If they don't have it in stock, they will get it. To get the best price you will have to wait 'til he has a stock order, it lowers the freight!

Home Depot's prices will be good when they open, just like KMart was, but after they figure out the system, they will be up to par with island prices. Availability is the key with a store like that. Sometimes when you are working on something, it's nice to find a place that has everything all of the time! Home Depot stateside has no problem ordering from a supplier that can truck stuff in overnight so not to run out. Here the quickest way is maybe 2 weeks, if you are lucky, usually it take three weeks. If they have proper inventory control they should make it. Hopefully they won't be drawing from their PR warehouse, as that makes it more expensive!

Matt,
I just tried to order (again) on the BestBuy site. No luck. Is just me...am I doing something wrong? It says in their shipping info that they ship to P.O. Boxes and to the USVI, but still I get error messages. Do you actually know anyone in the VI that has received shipments from BestBuy? Just trying to find out whether I can get my digi cam from them or whether I need to hit the USVI pavement.

Go to Ram at Boolchand's at Havensight or Prem at Royal Caribbean on Main Street. Tell them I sent you! If they don't laugh you out of the store, I am sure they will give you a good deal!
