community question
Hello!
We are a lesbian couple moving to St Thomas in the coming months and were wondering how accepting the community is about gay people. Also we are pregnant (just one of us, Ha Ha!) and wanted to know there are any other known gay couples raising children there or maybe how other families might feel about that. We have never really thought about what others think because we are who we are, but now that a child is coming it's something we take more notice of. Any advice or comments are appreciated! Also thanks to all of those who take the time to help others out, this site is awesome!
Hello RTM,
Welcome to the board. (Going to give you a longish opinion.) I have visited "gay communities" in a few areas of the mainland and seen grocery stores, bars, restaurants, apartment buildings, novelty stores, flower shops, hardware stores, advertisements, billboards ect. ect. focusing on the gay/lesbian community and marketing at them. I suppose I would look at this as one end of a scale and no acceptance as the other. St. Thomas would be maybe in the middle - you would be accepted as people, as a couple, as a family however would not have areas or shops or a large community of gay people living in one area to look forward to. There are gay people here though and they do socialize together - as to whether there are any raising children within a gay relationship I don't know. There are folks here that disapprove; in my opinion if you were very affectionate in public you would draw attention to yourselves and would get sneers, comments and negative feelings directed at you. As for your child - well I think this is a topic that is still being muddled over by people - so sure you will find people who question your choice and the correctness of the family structure your relationship offers a child and there will be others that would be ok, interested, friendly.
All the best!
