Community Building
My wife and I recently visited St Thomas and St John, and I just fell in love with the islands and the people (locals). To make a long story short, I am seriously considering making a career change and moving my family to St Thomas and starting up a small business. I have a business idea in mind, but I am looking for ways to make it more unique, in a way that helps build up the community on the island, or help improve the overall quality of life of the people. I am hoping to make an extended visit to get more of a feel of what island life is all about, but can anyone tell me what some of the pains are that locals experience on a daily basis? What are some things that people can volunteer to do in local communities that might help the people? What do you feel (if anything) is missing that you would like to see on the islands?

Public Safety
Everything I've read says that crime really isn't that bad...no worse than anywhere else in the US. Is that no the case? Or are you referring to something other than crime?
our murder rate ( mostly gang related ) is generally higher than stateside.
read the thread on the two school girls and other crime threads and then come back
and let us know if you think thats okay

Wow, I never said any crime was okay. I hope the people responsible for those things are brought to justice. No matter where you go, you're going to see the results of the evil that's in this world. That wasn't the point of my main post, but I would still like to get a feel for how people who live in St Thomas feel about how bad it is, in general. Thanks for your input!
Your right, crime can, and does happen everywhere.
There are some manic depressive types who post regularly on this site, however none of then are selling everything and booking flights to... (an unknown place without crime).
Life is what you make it, no matter where you are. There are plenty of earlier posts on topic. Take some time to search the archives. There is a wealth of great information here.

I posted this on another thread but it may be relevant to your question here too.
I don't know if making it easier to conceal or open carry a firearm is a good plan for the USVI.
Having said that I certainly can say I personally have changed my behavior because now I ASSUME anyone may have a gun. [legally or illegally]
I absolutely suppress any expression of road rage or making any comments to any other person who exhibits disturbing actions when I previously would have said something -- now I ignore it totally because it feels like anyone could just pull out a weapon and use it.
Never go out late to bars anymore and I was a 4am regular at closing time, both as a patron and employee, for decades here. Of course I am older, wiser? now but the threat of violence is just as big a part of it and the amount of late night drunk driving seems to have escalated too.
I have changed a lot of my thoughts on where and when I feel perfectly safe anymore and now even hear occasional gunfire in my neighborhood of 35+ years - that was NEVER true before.
It has occurred to me to leave the Islands - even after over 40 years of living here - but the good things of life I enjoy here far, far outweigh the increasing stupid violence.
This is the same anywhere you live now - the threat of violence is nearby and is a fact of life. Except in FL you KNOW people are armed.
Having well-armed paranoid neighbors and colleagues does not make me feel safe. I really have no idea who they are planning to shoot.

If everyone had an "Attack Gator" we wouldn't have any crime issues here 😀
