Hi, I'm coming to STT on the 8th for a job interview and I'm staying the week to check everything out. I don't want to treat this like a "vacation" even though that's what it feels like at the moment. What are some things I need to do while I'm there to get a feel for the island? Was thinking about checking out a couple of rentals if I'm feeling it as well. Is there a specific area of the island that is recommended? I'm a 28 year old single male

Thanks for any input! 🙂

Andy

This is what is called a PMV, or Pre-Move Visit. You are correct to try to treat this as NOT a vacation, as many who have come before you have done so, then, when they came, they only lasted a short while before they moved back...to see if you are suited to this place, you need to do things like you would when you live here...such as, rent a car and drive during peak times: 7:00 to 9 am and 3:00-5:00pm...this is so you get an idea of how long it actually takes to get from one place to another when going to and from work....also, go to WAPA, stand in line...go to the bank, stand in line, go to the Post Office, stand in line, go to K-Mart, stand in line, go to Cost-U-Less, stand in Line, go to Home Depot, stand in line, go to the BMV, stand in line, go to the grocery store, stand in line...do you see a pattern here? Things are done 'differently' here...not necessarily better or worse, just 'different'...and different takes time...besides, it's an island, where ya goin' in such a rush?? And don't even think to yourself "Well this is silly! Why don't they just ______" (fill in blank appropriately), cuz it'll only be wasting your energy...we do things the way we do things, cuz this is the way we've ALWAYS done things and how we'll always DO things...and we aren't gonna change! Haha! I don't say this for any other reason than I thought this to myself SO MANY times when I first got here, had conversations with people about it, even tried to change some things...nope. Wasted effort. Acceptance is the greatest asset you can bring with you (JMHO). Get the Island Trader (comes out on Thursdays) and read it from front to back...you can also read the Daily News and Trader on-line at http://www.virginislandsdailynews.com/, give these a read, just to familiarize yourself with the goings on. And don't forget to greet every person to whom you will speak with "Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening/Night", instead of any other greeting! SOoo important here! Read thru all the stories on this board and, as you have already, ASK QUESTIONS! Loads of help to be gleaned from the folks on this board...good luck to you and I'll see ya 'round the rock!

YOU SHOULD LOOK AT THE ISLAND TRADER. YOU CAN GO ONLINE AND GET IT FROM THE VIDAILYNEWS.

WE HAVE A ONE BEDROOM AVAILABLE NOW. YOU CAN 340-715-5220 FOR MORE INFO, IF IT IS STILL THERE WHEN YOU COME. ALSO THIS PAGE HAS LOTS OF INFORMATION ON WHAT TO EXPECT.

YOU HAVE THE RIGHT ATTITUDE.

IS THE JOB INTERVIEW WITH THE RITZ OR MARRIOTT? MOST ARE.

GM has become quite a bit more strict on their dealers and requiring so much more training than before. I basically just take every class and test I can get my hands on and once you pass all of the tests, you can achieve their world class technician status which puts me in the top 2%. I've had it now for 4 years and just keep taking more classes. Dealers start calling you about jobs because it's alot cheaper to hire someone who already has it than send people to training. It's good to meet someone else in the business 🙂 What all do you work on Marty?
