Coastweeks clean-up program begins Saturday

The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority is partnering with the University of the Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service Division and the Friends of the National Park by being a part of the 28th Annual Ocean Conservancy Coastweeks International Coastal Clean Up. Coastweeks clean-up activities begin Saturday and run thruough Oct. 31.
Here is a list of the planned activities in the territory
Saturday
- Columbus Landing on St. Croix, 8 a.m. Volunteers: Good Hope Country Day School.
- Frederiksted Pier, 8 a.m. Volunteers: St. Croix Educational Complex and CRABBS Dive Club.
- Brewers Bay on St. Thomas, 8:30 a.m. Coastweeks start-up party at noon. Volunteers: UVI and Friends of the Community.
- Dorsch Beach on St. Croix, 9 a.m. Volunteers: Central High School ROTC.
- Half-Penny Beach on St. Croix, 9 a.m. Volunteers: UVI Psychology Club.
- Drunk Bay on St. John, 9 a.m. Volunteers: Friends of the Virgin Islands National Park, UVI and Friends of the Community.
Sept. 28
- Hull Bay on St. Thomas, 9 a.m. Volunteers: St. Thomas Yacht Club, UVI and Friends of the Community.
- Tutu and Mandahl Beaches on St. Thomas, 9 a.m. Volunteers: Environmental Association of St. Thomas (EAST), UVI and Friends of the Community.
Oct. 5
- Water Bay (near Coral World) on St. Thomas, 9 a.m. Volunteers: Coral World, Blue Flag, Coki Beach Dive Club, UVI and Friends of the Community. Clean Up will be in the water and on land; first 20 participants will get a free day pass to Coral World.
- Altoona Lagoon on St. Croix, 9 a.m. Volunteers: UVI Science 100 Class.
Oct. 12
- Fortuna Beach on St. Thomas, 9 a.m. Volunteers: Caribbean Oceanic Restoration and Education Foundation, UVI and Friends of the Community.
Oct. 19
- Vessup Beach on St. Thomas, 9 a.m. Volunteers: UVI And Friends of the Community.
Volunteers are needed for each event.
All volunteers should wear sunscreen, a hat, closed-toe shoes and clothing that can get wet as cleaning takes place along the shoreline. Also, bring plenty of water, preferably in a reusable bottle along with a snack. Trash bags, gloves and data cards will be provided to collect and tally items collected during the clean-up.
Community groups and organizations can coordinate their own event with the assistance from the major coordinators on each island.
