Hello everyone!!!! Hope all is well with you!!! I will be moving May of 2005 and will be working in a law firm. Of course, I will bring work attire and play attire. My question is: Where do I shop (not expensive) for new work attire and play attire at a reasonable cost once I am there? You know all girls have to have new wardrobes. 🙂 I've read so much on what stores are on St. Croix but I can't find one clothing store except maybe KMart. Does KMart even sell clothes? Thanks in advance, Kathy

There is a fabulous natural fabrics (e.g., linen) store on Strand Street in Christiansted that I always visit when I am there, "PacifiCotton."

there are very few choices for shopping here. most people order online or buy things when they go to PR or the states. i live on STT but i assume STX is the same? There are some expensive stores like Tommy Hilfigger and whatnot . my favorite store on the island is called White House Black Market and you can find cute things there (but look for the sales!!)

In the west end I've found some things at Jane's Boutique. It's across from the Plaza Extra on STX. KMart has clothes. I had some of my clothes altered before I came down, at a colleagues suggestion. If I thought it would work without looking completely ridiculous, I had long sleeves cut into short ones for light blazers or silk twin sets. I've had a hard time adjusting to the heat. I've been surprised at the clothes that I wear repeatedly and those that I find too hot that I thought I would wear here. Personally, if it's not made of natural fibers I get too hot.
Good luck!

Kathy,

Would you be able to share any information as to how you went about finding employment in a law firm on the island? I am a personal injury paralegal in Atlanta, Georgia with approximately 15 years of experience, and I have plans to relocate to the USVI. My ultimate goal is to run a charter service from my trawler yacht, but until I can get comfortable in that business and learn the territories, I may consider working as a paralegal in the interim. Also, do you have any idea as to what kind of salary I can expect? I anticipate the salaries are less down there, but I would gladly take a pay cut to give up my 3 to 3½ hour daily commuting time with which just about anyone in Atlanta is blessed! Since you already have a job in a law firm lined up, I suspect you may have already done the homework! Thanks for any information you may be able to share.

Ang

Thanks for all the wonderful input on clothing! I may just alter some of mine -- I didn't think of that.

Ang: I'm a paralegal now in Jackson, Mississippi. The female attorney I work for now has 2 friends that are attorneys on St. Croix. I am going to work for them. She has guaranteed me the job but nothing in writing yet. I have no doubts though since I've been doing this for 18 years now. I'm estimating that I will have to take a pay cut as well but not by much because of my experience. I'm guessing about $40,000 which is fine with me to live in paradise. Good luck to ya!!! Kathy A
