Citibank
I noticed that Citibank was listed under major banks in STT. I called them today to inquire about opening an account with them. The financial rep told me that they do not have any branches in the USVI. I am assuming that she would know but if any one has any more info on this...Thanks again!!!

FirstBank bought them out a while back...
The only Citibank office is a commercial operation.

Thank you both for the input. What are the main banks down there? I'm opening up an account before I leave and if I can find a bank here that has a branch down there...well that might be the easiest thing to do so I don't have to open one and then close it and reopen one there...
Much Thanks...

If you have a Banco Popular in your town you might be able to, but most times when there was a stateside bank here, you couldn't do business back and forth with thei stateside operation. We have Banco Popular and First Bank, two Puerto Rican banks and Scotiabank, a Canadian bank. Don't ask me which is best, as they all have thir problems!

Isn't there a Chase bank down there as well? That would be a bank that exists stateside.
As Islander would say:
The usvi phonebook is the best source

I find this very useful because I can go by many search methods such as by business, by island.... you get the picture.
I have also found it a pain to really find anything about the banking except they are all under the same rules as stateside. Your money is protected. Lending is the same.
I think the best way is to contact via phone find out if you can open an account via wire transfer of an amount, and priority mailing signature cards. This is what I'm thinking about doing.
An added note about priority mailing
If you send jewelry or are moving the post office suggested sending valubles as certified register mail.. Thats where it is under lock and key from door to door basically and is insured for the full value.
Might want to check into this also...
Juni,
Chase Bank was bought out by First Bank. It never really cooperated well with the stateside Chase Banks anyway. Your options are as previously stated - Banco Popular, First Bank, Bank of Nova Scotia (not FDIC insured but also not as actively ruled by IRS code as it is not a US bank), Community Bank (St. Croix only). There are several credit union type banks. First Bank is probably the easiest to set up a long distance account with. Good luck.
Pamela.
