cingular phone service
Hi,
I have spoken to several folks who work at Cingular and keep getting different answers so I am wondering if anyone can help...
I have a Cingular phone. When I move to the USVI can I use the same phone? I have a 'national call plan' so theoretically, since the USVI is part of the US, it should not make any difference, but no one can say for sure. Of course, I would not want every call I make, or calls that others make to me (from the USVI) to be a long distance call.
Some say that I would have to cancel my policy with them, others say not so.
(I could just switch to an international plan, I guess.)
Any one with some experience with this, with any info.?
Thanks!
(Thinking of you all, asI live in this winter Connecticut weather...It is wearing on me.)

Hello,
I just moved here and switched my phone over.
It was quite a process. I was with ATT&T after the buyout but i was still an ATT&T customer.
When I came here my phone had to be migrated. I had to get a new phone new SIM ect. It was all free. But took some time.
You are part of the US here so you can call anywhere in the us and its part of the national free long distance thing.
Caller id does not work. except within companies. ie if someone from a local # or sprint calls u it will not work. only a cingular phone will work.
coverage is pretty good. works on the ferry to st john!
in towards hills it does not work.
you will have trouble with calling 611. or any support # you will get transfered to puerto rico and dumped or something almost all the time. so if you have problems you have to go into the office in crown bay here.
let me know if you have any other questions.

when you say caller ID doesnt work, is that even for people programmed into your phone? for example on my verizon phone right now, anyone in my phone book will show up as their name when they call, and other people just show up as their phone number and the city they are calling from.
Is Verizon available on StX? Will mine from the states work there when we are on our fact finding mission?
No i mean it doesnt work at all.
If you have cingular and you call my cingular cell phone. It is going to say. either your # or the info I have programmed in.
If you call from a local # or sprint. or anything else. or off island it will say Call. even if your in my phone book.

I do not know if verizon works on St Criox.
I am fairly sure it doesnt work on St Thomas or St John so chances are slim....

Thanks for the info!
If any one else had experience with moving with Cingular, I'd appreciate hearing their take.

A comment about keeping your stateside cell phone- If you are out searching for jobs and give a long distance number for an employer to call back, you might be passed over for someone with a local number. I have seen this happen with new folks.
Cingular phones work on STX. If you have a mainland "National Plan", you can call anywhere on island or in the states with no long distance or roaming charges.
However if you have a stateside number it is a long distance call from home phones on the island.
You can get a new number on island that will be a local call, except not from mainland phones.
The signal strength varies around the island.
