Ciguatera treatment
Under a thread below about local fish, a discussion about ciguatera poisoning ensued. I found this interesting article about treatment, Sail Away... http://www.rehablink.com/ciguatera/treat.htm
Thanks, EE.
I said there is no "medical treatment" for the condition, when I meant to say there is no "CURE" for it, so I apologize. Intravenous mannitol is indeed the best option available once exposure has occurred, and has been recognized as such since those early tests in the middle 80's.
However, over time the general consesus has grown to be that mannitol is symptomatic in therapy, has varying effectiveness with different presentations, and must be administered within 72 hours of exposure to be effective (unfortunately too many cases don't get diagnosed that quickly).
I think avoiding exposure is a far better option wherever possible.
