Good Morning All!
I was curious about the selection of christmas trees available on STX. I know there are the standard (overpriced) fake ones at kmart. However, I also heard a rumor they sell a few live ones around the swimming team area? Anyone know anything about this ? I love having real trees, but don't want to go bankrupt purchasing one either! Also, anyone order from Ebay? Seems like they have some great deals, nots ure about shipping though!

I saw a sign for Christmas trees at Garden Spot nursery, which is just past the Pueblo at Golden Rock. I haven't been in, so I don't know about price or selection.
As for Ebay.. i have ordered several times, and it just depends on the seller. Some will ship here, some won't, some will try to charge outrageous shipping prices. I always ask the seller first.

Gallows Bay Hardware/Appliance already has their trees in and have their tent set up for sales. Don't know about their prices, but they always have a large selection. The Garden Spot has had trees in the past, but I think you have to order them in advance, not sure about this. I don't know if their's are on island yet or not. The swim team (The Dolphins) have sold trees in the past, but I think you also have to order them in advance.

Or just go the island/tropical theme route and get one of the rope light palm trees at KMart. It doubles as an XMAS tree in the winter and as a nice way to light up the gallery or patio or garden area the rest of the year.

Just compelled to add my two cents. When I came here donkey's years ago I briefly waxed nostalgic for a real tree and for two years purchased a "live" fir. Oh those poor things!

They travel in a sea-going container to get here, are commercially sprayed with pine scent and sometimes even with some sort of green "paint." You put them up, decorate them and dutifully provide them with sugar water and within days they start to moult in the heat. The damned needles shed in a heartbeat and long after the poor dead thing has been relegated to the dumpster or the bush, you're still cleaning up those needles which manage to sneak their way into every little nook and cranny of your house.

I had a century plant for a few years thereafter which I decorated in the traditional way and then a measly minor hurricane wiped that out (it was kept on the porch during off-season!) and I've happily ever after indulged my Christmas fantasies with artificial trees.

I was always a purist where Christmas trees were concerned and over several years on the mainland (not to mention England during formative years) it was simply a "given" to either have (a) a live tree in a big pot which could be planted outside or (b) if you're in an area where pine trees grow, get up there on a ladder and do a "topping-off" with a chainsaw.

Where the latter was concerned I was Director of Operations. I never was very good at dealing with ladders.

"No, don't chop there - higher!" "Wait a second, no, come down a bit!" "Oh, stop being such a wooz, there's nobody around and I'll let you know if I see blue lights on the horizon and if I say FREEZE then just melt into the tree," etc.

I was pretty good and the tree wasn't killed, just nicely pruned...

When in Rome? When in the Caribbean...

There used to be loads of purveyors of "real trees" (including KMart on STT until a few years ago) but the number certainly has diminished.

Christmas is Christmas is Hannukah is Hannukah is Kwanze is Kwanze and all else. You can't always get what you want but if you try some time you just might find you get what you want. I should write a song about that - good lyrics! The embellishments and the decorations are simply a sign that you care.

So follow up your embellished care AFTER the holiday season is over and do something for your community.

My two cents turned into several dollars. Cheers to all! And goodnight!

I just spoke with the owner of The Garden Spot and they do have some trees in right now...balsam firs and though many are spoken for, there are some extras. She told me they go for $15/ft. good luck ( there is no such thing as luck, my wife tells me....)
