Choosing between Banco Popular & First Bank
My stateside bank has become a nuisance. Golden Rock has both a Banco Popular & a First Bank. The scuttlebut seems negative on the local banks, so I was about to choose Banco Popular just because their website is more informative. Then I phoned the number they list for VI & US & got only that fast busy signal that I usually get when the call is impossible from my location. Does anyone know another number that works on STX?
Check your local phone book. It will list the main number plus location of different branch locations so you can call to set up appointment with branch nearest to you. Ask to speak to a manager.
I use BP and am happy (for the most part) with them compared to other local banks I've used over the decades of living here.
I only use them to maintain a checking account.
Thanks, I will thy to google up a local phone book.
You can pick up a free Innovative phone book at any of their locations. Good to have when living here. They even have a smaller sized version to keep in car/truck which I find very handy
You referred to the Golden Rock locations. When I've had to go to BP I've never been able to find a decent parking spot.
So the "real" phone book only gives the main number 693.2777
I found this section of their website which gives you branch numbers:
Banco Popular
Orange Grove's number is 693.2902
U gotta pick your days! I try never to go to bank on Mondays or Fridays or the day after one of the holidays. I like BP due to its many locations and drive throughs here it STT. Their services have been pretty good if I had a problem. As good as it gets here in islands, anyway.
Banco Pop is probably the best of a bad choice.
Does anyone know if there are any banks on STX that have branches in the states ? Thanks, L
Banco Pop has branches on the mainland.
Here's a list...

We were satisfied with BP.
My favorite part of opening my account with First bank was not my checks arriving 7 weeks later, but the part where on my subsequent statement showing I had been charged $252 for my booklet of checks.
Yes, $252. Where I come from someone would get a cap popped in their ass for that sh*t.

Presumably you disputed it? Can't possibly be correct unless you ordered a whole case and the lettering was embossed gold leaf. 😀
Twas correct. One simple book of 300 checks. They did not have prices listed in the catalog they showed me, but produced a price list after I bitched. I guess I should have asked about pricing perhaps, but no bank had ever sodomized me like that before, so I never would have thought First Bank would have.
My second favorite part about banking there is waiting in a 12 person line with one working teller, who then treats me like I'm asking for government cheese. It makes me feel quite special.
If people who were born in the VI and have nothing else to compare it to ever got a taste of what a real bank was like nowdays (if any would ever open a branch here) Scotia and First bank would lose more than 1/2 their deposits in the first 12 months. Easy.
Happy with Banco
I never buy the checks from the bank. I use Checks Unlimited. Cheap and never a problem.

I bought my first checks from BP when I opened an account there. They cost me about $25-$30. About the same as state-side banks.
When those checks ran out, I bought from Checks Unlimited or a similar company. I agree with Juanita, they are inexpensive and I never had a problem with them.
