Chilli cookoff
Thought I heard a ad on radio for chili cookoff being held on the 12th
Is this correct? At the Divi?
its not usually held in december? usually august, so i am not sure. i still cant get any info from here on the gallows bay open house. , not even in the calendar of events.

what a switch. usually in august and usually at divi .
My guess is that it has nothing to do with the nationally sanctioned summer chili cookoff but is a privately sponsored local t'ing.
First (and last) ones we ever went to at the Divi were held in March and April in 2011 and 2012. So not sure when "usually" is going to be in the future. The proceeds from the ones at the Divi every year go to United Way.

As it has been for the last 12 years, the cook-off will take place at 11 a.m. Aug. 3 at Divi Carina Bay Beach Resort and is expected to draw a dynamic crowd of supporters from all walks of life.
i had only been to the chili cook offs in august. and it has been 2 years since i went. i went to probably the 3 before that

Unclear writing by the article's author.
Here's the March, 2011 one I went to:

Here's a promo for the April, 2012 one:

These were the 10th and 11th annual UW cook-offs. Can't remember why I walked into the kitchen 45 minutes ago. But I can remember chili cook-offs I've been to. Go figure.

Edited to add more info:
It was always held in the Spring until 2013. They moved it to August in 2013, to attract more tourists (the people attending/participating in the STT cook-off around that time).
Lol looks like we are both correct in what we remembered

This is NOT the real Chili Cook-Off!!!
This sham event is being promoted by a convicted fraudster who has already duped several local businesses into believing that this event is the real chili cook-off. A local radio station has aired public announcements disavowing any connection with the event or promoter, who was recently an on-air personality for a short period of time.
Beware. Don't be fooled.
interesting

fooled into eating counterfeit chili?
I guess I get it, you get kind of attached to event names when you helped create them, pretty lame move to steal the name and set up an event using other peoples work (the brand building).
Not cool if they are trying to pass it off as THE UW cook-off, which raises money for a charitable organization. I haven't seen or heard them trying to do that, but don't listen to the radio much. If they are operating fraudulently (money or marketing-wise), then they should be called out. Maybe some more who/what/when/and or where? would be helpful to justify the "sham" remarks.
Otherwise, what's wrong with having more than one? Especially since they are months apart? I don't believe "chili cook-off" is a trademark.
Not smart, same day as the boat parade?
My dance card is already full
Reverend Raven-2pm Blues Backyard
Bob Marley Tribute-4pm
Boat Parade and Fireworks-6pm
The UW cookoff is a CASI sanctioned event as is the cookoff in St. Thomas. If you goto chili.org and look at list of upcoming cookoffs, the one on the 12th is not listed. It is kinda lame that someone is using a well established event to scam money if indeed that is the case. Last I had heard the STX UW cookoff was kinda on hold due to organizational issues.
I miss the STX cookoff, competed in STT one for 14+ yes and have done STX one a couple of times as well. Had a blast even though it was way different. I liked the fact it wasn't quite as crazed.
I was trying to figure out how to do cookoff over there but after hearing this kinda glad I'm not.
Regardless, cookoff are always fun but can't figure out why they chose Hotel on the Day for the location, doesn't seem like turnout will be that great...
sttanon, when you get a chance PM me with your email address or link to FB page. Have some neat pics of you and the better half from one of the STT cookoffs a few years back which you'd enjoy!
Can't understand why they chose August when there's way more tourists on island in the springtime if their goal was to attracl tourists.

It was to grab the people who attend and participate in the STT chili cook-off. Chili's great. But you aren't going to attract a lot of people to come to a tropical island to attend a single afternoon's event based on chili, unless the tourists are really into that kind of thing. Plenty of home-town cook-offs to attend.
I can only speak for the STT event but my understanding is that one of the reasons for holding it in August is precisely because it IS slow season. Locals have more time to prep than they have in high season which is a real plus for those participating. There's always a huge crowd, more money is raised each year and it's not an event designed to draw tourists but one in which locals gather for a fun day to support good causes.
PS: watruw8ing4 is right - there are similar events held all over the US where locals there participate. A very few serious chili masters do come here from off island for our cook-off since the winner qualifies for the final annual championship in TX.

Still not sure why it's a scam/sham, since nobody's offered any evidence. Regardless, one does not need to be sanctioned by CASI, ICS, or any of the other national association in order to donate event proceeds to charity. For that matter, nobody is required to donate proceeds to charity in order to hold a cook-off of any kind.
As for venue. maybe they think they can get people to hang out until the boat parade.

From what I had heard it was to also see if they could get the Texans that came down to compete in STT to go to STX to compete as well, the idea failed badly and backfired ...
There is a very simple explanation behind why STT cookoff is in August which is 3fold.
STT cookoff used to be 3rd Sunday in September at Sapphire Beach. After some issues that occured with rooms getting damaged ( if you were ever there saturday night before a cookoff you would understand ), we had to find another place to hold it. Bolongo offered to host it and we accepted. In planning with Bolongo they wanted to do it in August because of occupancy levels at hotel being low which would free up rooms for chefs to be able to rent. It also worked out well because of less chance of a storm causing a cancellation and more people were on island in August rather than September which is a big month for seasonal employees to be on vacation.
OT no problem. I cooked beside OldTart many years and always had a good time and the b.s. was always deep and we always had a good time.......

I have no idea, was commenting on earlier post. I was curious about it but have heard nothing about proceeds from the event going to charity. As far as needing to donate to charity, yes there is no requirement for that but give me a break. STT cook off is almost 30 and STX is almost 15 yrs old. I can only speak for STT when it comes to donations but for yrs the cookoff raises around $30k for charities that need it. Yes there is no claim for the idea but if the money isn't going to charity then I kinda think it is using well established events to glom bucks............ Krewe de Croix does all sorts of events and never seen one as a for profit ...

Here's all the evidence you need:
Alec Dizon is the promoter.
