childcare, housing
Hi! I have tried to sift through the many pages of topic threads, but have a couple of specific questions...hope I am not duplicating too much!
My husband and I are considering moving to STX with our 7 month old daughter. I will be staying at home with her and am curious about what kind of activities there are for young children, since she will not be in daycare. Are there Mommy-and-me type groups, children's gyms etc? I know things are very different on island but I just have no idea what to expect with regard to this.
Secondly, we are interested in renting a house, before we buy, to decide if island life is a long-term fit for us. We would like to rent a single family home in the price range of around $2400.00/mo. I have not seen a lot of rentals on the real estate sites except for short term vacation-type rentals. Can anyone give me an idea of what we could expect to get for the price range, if such rentals even exist and what areas we might want to focus on?
Thanks so much for any information/advice!
Vanessa
Vanessa,
There are many homes you can rent within your stated budget. You can easily afford a single-family home, probably within a gated community if that is your preference, within your stated budget for rent. It may be that you can even find something with a swimming pool for that rate and you are almost certain to find something with a great view of the water in an area you would find appealing.
Have you ever visited St. Croix before? Selecting the right part of the island for you will depend in part on where your husband would be working.
There are many other parents of infants and pre-school children on the island who are seeking play groups for their little ones. A few of these parents are likely to speak up on this website and others can be located once you are on-island.
I wish you the very best of luck in exploring the possibility of becoming a resident of St. Croix. Many of us have found it a very nice place to live after a previous life on the U.S. mainland.
Alexandra- Thank you so much for your reply - very helpful! We have been to St. Croix once before, when my husband interviewed. He would be working with Hovensa.
Thanks again for the feedback.

I moved to stx in february and stayed at home with my 4 and 2 year olds (have done so for 3 years) and finally found that although we lived in a nice area, went to the beach several times a week, and made many friends, I was bored out of my mind. I went to the states for 6 weeks this summer and decided that upon arriving back on island I would get a job. In the states I was part of many playgroups, gymnastics, karate, etc., but found very little along those lines here. I may have simply been looking in the wrong places, or am too restless, but for me, I can't do it anymore. I need to do more than go to the beach 5 days a week. Thats just my experience. I hope that with a job I am busier and can actually start enjoying the beaches and pool again. Best of luck and best wishes to you.
