Hi all,

I'm planning to move to St. John at the end of October or first of November. I'm a recovering lawyer and am working on my Ph.D in Coastal Resource Management. I'm at the point where I've finished classes and am working on my dissertation, which I will be able to do in St. John - assuming I can find a part-time job and a place to live. Ideally, I will make connections and be able to get a full-time job when I finish my degree - in a perfect world, at the National Park . . . (The sound you hear is God laughing at me.)

I've learned a great deal on these boards and appreciate all the advice. However, I'm stymied about something. I understand that I can't get a place to live without going to the island, but I can't go to the island without a place to live. I know this is hard to believe, but as a student, I can't afford to stay at one those ritzy, St. John hotels.

How have ya'll (yes, I am from Georgia) handled this?

To complicate matters, I have two cats who graciously let me support them. (One of whom, I recently caught grooming his face with my toothbrush.) So, I'd like to find somewhere these two spoiled, indoor cats can live with me. I'm holding out hope that I will be able to find somewhere affordable and furnished, preferably in Cruz Bay, since I can't afford to ship my car just yet. (The sound you now hear is you laughing at me.)

Thanks for the help,
Jen

First off, you don't have to live in a ritzy St. John hotel. When I moved down I lived at the Tamarind Court for 10 days while I looked for housing and the single rooms were about $55 a night.

I would leave the cats home until you got settled. STJ is very animal friendly so you should be able to find a place anyway.

I have a few friends who work for the Nat. Park here. Drop me a line when you get here!

Enjoy the adventure!

Hello there y'all. I did a 5 year stint in SC, so am aware of the difference between y'all and all y'all. Anyway, the rooms above sound very reasonable for St. John, although if you have time, you might post and ask anyone if they have a guest room you could do a daily rent on for your visit prior to moving.

I do that for folks on St. Croix, and it has worked out just beautifully. I was trying to find an alternative to how I got here, which was to spend over $150 per night in a hotel for weeks. I don't know whether it ran up my credit card or took from my savings, but in either event, it was not the right direction to be moving in just prior to relocating.

I wish you the best, and congratulations! As a legal advocate/therapist for people with disabilities, I worked on a board that was made up of entirely attorneys, except for me. All of them looked so fatiqued all the time. Although I had considered law school, that sort of took the sparkle out of it.

Best wishes with your relocation and your career,

Dan

Many of us stayed at The Crystal Palace whilst we found a place to live. Ronnie who posts on this message board is a great guy and is most welcoming to the newcomer - not to mention great rates. Give him a private message (PM) or contact him via The Crystal Palace.

I'd also recommend Tamarind. It's in close proximity to Cruz Bay. You could easily walk into town. Don't know if they accept cats, but it doesn't hurt to ask. You can reach Tamarind at 340-776-6378. Good luck!
