Cheap Lodging
We will be coming to STT and STX March 13-20 for job interviews, probably staying three days in each place. Since we will be moving there this summer, we are not looking for anything related to the tourist industry, just the least expensive lodging and a clean shower. Are there places that are not listed in the standard places that would be less expensive than those that are?

I answered my own question. I found st-thomas.com and st-croix.com then at
http://www.st-thomas.com/rates/index.html
There were downloadable PDFs for both islands with rates, amenities, phone numbers and addresses. The rates are out-of-date, but it's a great place to start. I leaning toward Green Iguana on STT and perhaps Pink Fancy on STX. Any comments on these?
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the wealth of information you have provided this lurker. By digging through the archives and purchasing the "Settler's Handbook" I found no reason to log on and ask any other questions.

hey Curious George! Just wondering, is the handbook worth it? You sound pretty positive about it, is there really a lot more info than on this site?
Many thanks!

The Pink Fancy on STX is a fabulous hotel with an excellent location. I stayed there recently and loved it! However, the rates were not "cheap" by any means. I paid $150, excluding tax, for one night. I will think of other options and post them. Perhaps Linda J, a STX resident, can help with suggestions.
On STT I knew someone who stayed on the super-cheap at the Galleon. Not at all fancy, but he said it was clean. It is also well-located.
Good luck on your interviews!
AlyE,
I don't know that you can't find all the info in the book online, but having it all pulled together and available at any time, including bedside reading was worth the $20 to me. (including shipping and handling)

Onika,
Thanks for your reply. Pink Fancy says $95/night on their website, but I haven't called yet. I can't find info on Galleon. Do you have a number?
More suggestions like that are welcomed everybody.
George
I found a number for The Galleon. Can anybody recommend or otherwise the following hotels:
STT: Galleon, Miller Manor, Mafolie
STX: Hotel Caravelle, King Christian, King's Alley,
Or have other suggestions.
Thanks,
George
Thanks for the thumbs up on the book, I also enjoy having a compiled handy reference, so I'll order it today. I'm currently putting together something I'm calling "The Case for St. Thomas" 65 pages thusfar, most of the info off this website. I'm putting together a binder of all the info I find that would affect our decision, including valuable posts from here. This message board is turning out to be a wealth of info., already dispelling preconcieved notions I held, both positive and negative. I look forward to learning more from other people who are beyond the preliminary stages of researching!
Happy Trails!

George,
Just got back from eight days at the Hotel Caravelle. It is really great. Probably the best restaurant in STX and right on the boardwalk and harbor. The staff is terrific, pleasant and helpful. Great downtown location and you can walk to lots of shopping. Rooms were very clean and nicely furnished. The view of the harbor is fantastic. If coming in from STT, take the sea plane. It docks about 1000 yds down the boardwalk and you can walk to the hotel. The webcam at www.gotostcroix.com shows the boardwalk (the camera is mounted on the side of the Sushi Bar at the hotel.) Plenty of other bars and restaurants and shops all along the harbor and boardwalk. Have a great trip!
I vote for the Galleon House on STT. I stayed there in May when I was looking to move here. When I did make the move in Sep, I stayed there again as I knew it was clean and included breakfast. The Galleon House got new management in August and the place is even better then it was before. The couple that run it Martha and her husband Sandy are awesome people, the rates are strill great and the place is perfectly located. Just my 2 cents.
