Hello!

Married couple definitely coming down to St. Thomas in August, looking at apartments. We are wondering if Charlotte Amalie is a safe place to live? We have read and heard opinions from both sides--no, it's not safe, high crime, stay out---and if you're smart and not walking around drunk and stoned at all hours you will be fine. I wanted to get some opinions from on-islanders. What do you think? Rent in Charlotte Amalie or elsewhere on ST?

Charlotte Amalie isn't all that big, but still there are a few places that would be better than others. If you want to be more specific about the location, I'll be glad to express an opinion, if I am familiar with the area. Overall, I would probably look elsewhere if you like to be outside at night, grilling, enjoying the view, limin', etc. Several nice "pockets" though.

You really need to be more specific about which area of Charlotte Amalie. Is there a reason you have to live there? As Juanita said, there are nice parts but there are also very nice parts above town also with great views.

I live in town and would not live anywhere else. It is also a case of perception. People perceive things about different parts of the island. Unless you have lived it you don't know.
I had a consultant that works for one of the local government agencies stay at my B & B for one of his visits. When he told the assistant to the department where he was consulting where he was staying, she immediately told him that she would send her driver with him to pick up his suitcase and take him to the Windward Passage, where he would be safer. She went as far as to call his home office in the states to tell them about it. Imagine a government agent telling someone something like that. I have yet to figure what to do with her. How I am to make money to pay my taxes to fuel their system when they do things like that? He now does not stay with me as to not suffer the grief he gets from the gov't office. I can assure her that there are more incidents related to guests of the Windward Passage as compared to my place (one, someone not following my advice)
I am saying this, as I wonder what part of the island that she lives on that is so perfect that she would make a statement like that based on her perception of what it's like in my area. My neighboring B & B's owner, who lived on the East end and now owns and operates here, told me she loves it. Granted there are areas that are rough, but as it was said before, there are some nice areas as well.

Ronnie, do you know who this assistant's boss is? I think I'd speak to that person instead of her.

She is actually the assistant Director. I will speak to the director.

With all due respect to Ronnie, We just moved out of downtown and are much happier to not hear gunshots every night and have crackheads and ex cons living on our doorstep. Parking is a big issue in CA too, but if you like the city and play it smart you may like it. Some folks do. I did not.

No need. Don't know what area you are talking about. I am talking about my area. Yes, gunshots do happen. Read the papers, they show them happening allover the place, including the Northside.

I heard them a couple nights ago in Frenchman's Bay.

We had them in Mandahl not that long ago. I used to work up near Mafolie Hotel and a number of times I flinched during the day hearing gun shots.

And the east end is SAFE? Comeon - there are just as many incidents there in the last five years as anywhere else on the island.
