Hi all,
so i have found a fantastic place to live in Secret Harbor however the gentleman is wary to rent to me because my main source of income will be bar tending. I am a NJ certified elementary teacher with excellent credentials and refs. I have seen a lot of posts about home schooling. if anyone out there is in need of a teacher or full-time sitter/ tutor please e-mail me and let me know asap!

Your certification should help you a lot. I believe only 40 percent of USVI public school teachers are certified. Sorry, I can't help with any leads. Best wishes.

If you are looking for teaching jobs they are DESPERATE for teachers here. Call the Antilles School they need substitutes badly and probably a few teachers too. I was just on Monster and there were a few teacher positions there as well.

Good luck,

Stu

I enrolled to be a sub at Antilles, had a great interview, they kept talking about how badly they need subs, however, i have not had a call yet. i know most teachers try not to call in sick for the first couple of weeks, but i was hoping i'd have something by now... just a warning that subbing at Antilles may or may not be fruitful...

You can also check with All Saints school (774-0231). Like most schools on the island, they are usually looking for teachers. One caveat with subbing at Antilles or teaching at All Saints is the money - I've known bartenders who make more money than us teachers. With your certification, you might try the Dept. of Ed. for jobs in public schools - the pay is higher. Good luck!

The Dep't. of Education Human Resources division has an website at http://teachislands.vi/ From that website you can subscribe to receive e-mails as new jobs are posted. Currently there are availabilities in both USVI districts (St. Thomas/St. John and St. Croix) for just about every conceivable position in public education. I receive frequent e-mails and just about cry each time, wishing I could but knowing I am unable to relocate.

Shevon,

There is an extreme shortage of teachers in STJ! Someone at the hotel I'm staying at is a teacher in Coral Bay and she said they are desperate for teachers!

I've never taught anything in my life and she wanted me to apply to teach computers!

Shevon: If you are on the east end, you might want to check at Montessori.

Did you get any replies about teaching in StX? I'm a certified Spec. Ed (MA) teacher in rural Hawaii. How is your job hunt going?

Do you need a substitute teaching certificate to sub down there? In PA you need to take a test and pass it to sub, and a few night classes? I guess if you don't even need a cert. to teach full time you won't need one to sub, but i thought i would check.

Hi there everyone,

I am living here on St. Croix with my 14 yr. old son, and for some time now, prior to moving here, and now that I have arrived, I have contemplating what to do in the way of schooling. I have had so much good advice on the private schools here, but the majority are out of my budget and not near where I am, which is on the east end. I have seen a few postings here regarding tutoring and/or homeschooling. Which I have not ruled out entirely. Would anyone know of a teacher with accreditation who would want to speak to me about schooling with my son? I'd be happy to correspond with anyone who is interested. Thanks to all!

Hello Bert & Meg,

Visit our section on education/schools at:

https://www.vimovingcenter.com/schools/

From that page there are links to the Dept. of Education web site which lists its requirements for teaching and has pay scales.

There are also links to each island with a list of schools. You can visit the private school web sites and look at their requirements.
