Cell Phones
Who provides the best cell service and is it possible or totally unpractical to keep you number from the states?
It's possible and practical. I'm on StX and have used my Cingular # from Colorado since September. My bill seems about the same month to month and didn't have to waste an afternoon at Sunny Isle.

I have Cingular now AT&T as well. Does anyone know if you can keep your stateside number and add another phone with a 340 area code?
Its not the most practical for a couple of reasons. When looking for a job, some employers will not call you back when you have an out of area number. Also it makes it inconvenient for the people you will get to know here, making them call a long distance number.
I understand. That is why we wanted to add a phone for my husband and my son and use the 340 area code. We wanted to keep my number and have our friends and family from the states use my number so that they would not be charges roaming fees. Not to mention those that don't have cell phones. Yes we do have family that still are using their land lines instead of a cell phone.
Is calling a USVI number considered free long distance on cell plans?
Generally if you are stateside and call a (340) number with a cell phone it's included in your plan. I have T-mobile and I use my phone on St. Thomas without any roaming charges as well. The phone is based in Philadelphia.
I changed to a 340# and really regreted it. Immediately I lost my caller ID, and everyone I knew had either Cingular or Sprint cellphones which have no long-distance fees on US numbers anyway. (Cingular to Cingular the caller ID usually does work). I had a home phone which was obviously a 340 #, but the reason for that was because the cellphone service, regardless of your provider, was terrible. Correct me if I'm wrong, and it has changed in the last year or two?
Curious1, calling a USVI number is definitely free long distance with Cingular/AT&T.
Cingular/AT&T has no roaming charges in the US. They consider the USVI and Puerto Rico part of the US. I stayed in Tortola a year ago and called home to Texas from there and they did not charge me any extras. I also received a call from Texas while we were in Virgin Gorda and they did not charge me roaming charges. I made one call while we were on Tortola to a car rental company on Tortola and they did charge me for that call. I would have thought that I would have been charged some type of roaming charges for making and receiving the calls from the BVI, but I didn't.
I am guessing it be advisable to add the extra lines while still in Texas instead of having to deal with it when I get to STT?
i just tossed my cellphone,i no longer want to be a cell phone person, my home phone is just fine, leave a message and when i get home i'll listen to it.
I think I have seen this before, but does Verizon not service the islands?

OK, all you folks who actually know trw, how long do you think it will be before he caves in and reaches for the cell phone?
trw, maybe this could be the start of a new twelve step program! (would do a smiley here, if only I knew how)
I had Verizon, but they charged me roaming. This was a few years ago.
trw,
Was it the infuriating last visit to the cell phone store that just sent you over the edge?
As if anyone cares, I was one of the holdouts on cell phones, it annoyed me to no end how people were so "tied" to them like an umbilical cord! However, now I rarely even check my home line because most of the people I would like to talk to only call my cell- they know I am never home!
My how things change....
I'll have to check out the Verizon coverage. Crossing fingers and toes that they work there roam free.

Just the colon and the parenthesis-- no "+"
i've only had a cell for alittle over a year,my whole attitude about them was they were only for mothers with children at home and drug dealers, and i literally did toss the thing, i threw it in the bush while i was driving one day and said the hell with it, why am i tied to this piece of black plastic. i made it just fine for 40 years without one and i will again.
🙂
I hope it turns out right
YAYYYY!!
We have ATT on STX and it works almost everywhere, except the far west North Shore where there is no service for ANY cell. We also have free long distance to the states.
I still think the actual phone has something to do with it too. My daughter was just here visiting from Oregon. She has ATT and a kinda fancy phone. Her phone worked all over my house and yard. I have ATT and a regular run of the mill camera phone, and I have to be in just the right place.
Linda i live down the hill from you i think and my att/cingular cell worked just fine in my yard and that was just a cheapie pay as you go thing.
🙂 😉
I loathe cell phones. Half the time I can't even figure out how to use it. The only thing I like is my ring tone is a dog barking. I got it for driving emergencies & have who-knows-how-much longer on my AT&T plan. I'd get rid of it today but would still be paying for it. I wonder if I could convince AT&T I'm dead. *-) Oh, and most of the time I can't hear on it & I don't think I'm going deaf yet. (Yes, I know how to adjust the volume.)
The other reason is nobody could reach me at home since I usually have the computer on but since I have DSL, now I can be reached.
