Cell Phones
HI ALL! I'm moving to STT and I'm curious about cell phone coverage! I read somewhere that there are only a couple that work, Sprint being one of them. Is this true, or has it expanded to more than just those two providers? Is there one that gets better reception down there?? Thanks a lot!
Sprintis one of them. I used to recommend them, but lately when you call a Sprint phone it takes more than one call to get thru. Last night I called a friend and it took 5 times! Cingular seems to have passed them now. I use a smaller company called Centennial and have the best results.

We use Cingular when on island. There are some areas where reception is difficult, but most of the time we have no problems.
And Cingular is part of our national plan so there are no roaming charges.
F.I.
I too recommend Cingular as. although I don't have a cellphone (possibly one of the few remaining people on the island who doesn't!) I have less trouble reaching on-island Cingular subscribers than those on other services. BUT, the "redial" aggravation exists with whichever system one uses here and one of the best articles written on the subject was posted by Jason Ackley as an Op-Ed contributor to St. Thomas Source (our excellent online newspaper.)
Also, apart from checking out all options available, do remember that those of us with (only) landlines aren't inclined to call back someone who has a cellphone with an off-island area code because we're charged for the long distance 'phone call. You can arrange for your area code to be changed to local 340 before coming here and, particularly if you're going to be either job or apartment-hunting, that will make life a lot easier for you.
Hope this helps. Cheers from the dodo!
I have Sprint and I am pleased. If you intend to live and/or work on the East End, there are some black out areas there.
Regarding the problem of getting through, that seems to be more a function of Innovative then Sprint. As long as I call from a Sprint phone to a Sprint Phone, I have never had a problem getting through.
I have had difficulties getting through to both Sprint or Cingular cell phones from an Innovative land line.
Sprint
Cingular
Centennial
Innovative
all offer cell phone service. I am with Cingular and they seem to be pretty good so far..
